Talanoa for Change: Health Sector Table Talk with Ken Laban 🗣️
Fauono Ken Laban is hosting a series of Table Talks across the Hutt to bring together community leaders from different sectors to talanoa about the key issues facing our city – and how we can work together to address them.
As someone with deep roots in Wainuiomata and a lifetime of public service across policing, broadcasting, and civic leadership, Ken believes that genuine progress starts with listening. That’s why these Table Talks are focused on hearing directly from those on the ground – people like you – who know the realities, challenges, and opportunities in our community.
This first Table Talk will bring together leaders across the health sector. It will be an open, respectful space to share perspectives, identify priorities, and explore ideas for how Council can better support the health and wellbeing of our people 🙏

Join Our Moana Babies Village 🌺
Every month, we gather as one aiga walking together through the sacred first 2,000 days of a child’s life. This is when pēpē grow strong, their little minds flourish, and the love and values of our Pacific people shine brightest.
We will have the lovely team from St Johns to take us through CPR and how to help our babies in scary situations to have the confidence and knowledge to take fast action
Moana Babies is more than a programme, it’s our village coming together to learn in a space where Pacific values at the heart. 🙏🏼
We look forward to welcoming our regular pēpē and new families alike.

💡Did you know that smoking can make diabetes harder to manage? For people living with diabetes, smoking affects how well insulin works, making it tougher to keep blood sugar levels steady. This can lead to more health risks and complications.
The good news? Quitting smoking can help bring your blood sugar under better control and improve your overall health and wellbeing.
Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley, alongside our local partners, is here to support you in taking that first step toward a smokefree life. 🚭
Choosing to live smokefree isn't just about today, it's about creating a healthier future for you, your aiga, and the generations to come. Together, we can build stronger, healthier Pasifika communities.

🇯🇵TUPU OLA from Japan🌸🌊
Across cultures, wellness flows like water—gentle, powerful, and deeply rooted.
Japan’s ikigai (life’s purpose), ki (vital energy), wabi-sabi (beauty in imperfection), and yuima-ru (community interconnectedness), these traditions remind us that well-being is more than surface level, it's spiritual, our communities and our ancestors connection to Nature.

This week, we launched and celebrated a huge milestone for our Dietitian Tino with the release of the Healthy at Home Recipe Book, a culturally tailored resource created in response to the high number of Type 2 diabetes cases among our Pacific and Māori communities. 🌺
This beautiful collaboration was led by our very own Registered Dietitian Tinomaria Atonio-Johnston, in partnership with Pathways Dietitian Ella Duxfield, and proudly designed by Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley. While the recipes are specifically developed with Type 2 diabetes in mind, they’re perfect for anyone wanting to reduce their sugar intake and enjoy healthier kai at home.
The recipe book is simple, practical, and full of flavour with a variety of everyday meals, snacks, and sweet treats that are both quick to prepare and delicious to eat. We’re excited for our Pasifika and Māori whānau to explore and enjoy these tasty, nourishing options together.
📱 Digital copies will be available online soon, watch this space!

We acknowledge the strong leadership of Joy Sipeli and her team at Kupega o Moana (Formerly NET Pacific) for facilitating the Ofania Symposium, a vital platform dedicated to prioritising the wellbeing of Pacific babies and families.
This gathering brought together key voices to focus on the first 2000 days of life, a crucial window for laying down strong foundations in health, development, and connection. When our babies are nurtured from the very beginning, the ripple effect supports their wellbeing for life.
Dr Claire Achmad highlighted the stark reality: 28% of Pacific children in New Zealand live in material hardship, compared to 13.4% of the general population. This reinforces what we already know in our hearts, that we must act now to protect the wellbeing of our pēpē and tamaiti.
Kupega o Moana’s Pacific-led solutions are already shifting systems and uplifting our communities. Programmes like Pasifika Shining Lights and Antenatal classes show how culturally grounded support creates real change for our Pacific families. 🌺

🌿Korean and Pacific wellness🌿
From the serenity of Hanjeongmak (Korean traditional saunas) to the herbal wisdom of Hanbang medicine and the self-care rituals of K-beauty, Korean wellness is deeply rooted in harmony between body, mind, and nature. 🧖♀️🌸
These practices resonate with Pacific wellness values in Aotearoa, where collective care, nature-based healing, and spiritual balance are a must. 🌊🌺 Whether it's the warmth of a Jimjilbang or the grounding power of whānau and whenua, both cultures remind us that wellness is more than skin deep—it's a way of life.
