COVID-19 is still present in our communities and during the colder months, cases can spread quickly through homes, workplaces, schools, and gatherings. 🦠❄️

For many Pacific families and households, protecting our elders, tamariki, and loved ones starts with staying informed and taking simple steps early.

Common COVID-19 symptoms can include:
➡️ Sore throat or cough
➡️ Fever or chills
➡️ Runny nose or congestion
➡️ Headaches and body aches
➡️ Feeling tired or short of breath
➡️ Loss of taste or smell

You should seek medical advice if you or someone in your aiga experiences:
➡️ Difficulty breathing or chest pain
➡️ Symptoms getting worse instead of better
➡️ High fever or dehydration
➡️ Ongoing fatigue or weakness

Ways to help protect yourself and your aiga:
➡️ Stay home if you are unwell
➡️ Wash and sanitise your hands regularly
➡️ Cover coughs and sneezes
➡️ Wear a mask if you have symptoms or are visiting vulnerable people
➡️ Keep up to date with vaccinations and boosters
➡️ Avoid close contact with others when sick

🚨 If you or someone in your household is feeling unwell or needs support managing COVID-19 symptoms, our team is here to help. Early support can help reduce complications and protect your family and community.

Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley is here to support you in taking the first step toward a smokefree future. Our qualified Quit Smoking Practitioners and Registered Nurses are here to provide free support, prescribe ni****ne replacement therapy (NRT), and culturally tailored care - by Pacific, for Pacific.

💡Did you know? Smoking rates among Pacific peoples in Aotearoa have dropped significantly from 22.6% in 2011/12 to 10.3% in 2024/25 - showing that positive change is possible. However, Pacific communities are still disproportionately impacted by smoking-related harm, with smoking rates remaining higher for Pacific men (13.4%) than Pacific women (7.7%).

It’s never too late to quit. Our team is here to walk alongside you on your smokefree journey, supporting healthier futures for our families and generations to come in the Hutt Valley.
Come and talanoa with us - together, we can take the next step toward becoming smokefree.

Today, on International Nurses Day, we honour the heart of our communities - Our Registered Nurses 🌺

Every day, our nurses at Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley show up with compassion and care for our people. From comforting fanau in difficult moments, to supporting healthier futures through every check-up, conversation, and act of kindness - their impact reaches far beyond the clinic walls. 🙌🏽
They are advocates, healers, listeners, and a constant source of support for our communities. The work they do often goes unseen, but it changes lives every single day.

To all our nurses, thank you for the alofa, dedication, and service you continue to give to the health and wellbeing of our people. We see you, we value you, and we celebrate you today and every day. Happy International Nurses Day 🙏🏼

"Sometimes when they say you’re the first, it’s like they look at you and ask, so what are you going to do?

I’m the first Pacific nurse practitioner in Wellington. It is a privilege, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes I think, it shouldn’t have been me. There are senior Pacific nurses I looked up to whom I feel should have been first.

What it means now is that I get to set the pathway for the young ones. It shows there is a goal, and that our Pacific nurses can do it.

Being Pacific plays a huge part in how I practise as a nurse practitioner. We have cultural intelligence. It’s not taught; it’s part of who we are.

Sometimes, you just know when your patient is not in the right position to talk. You know when to ask, is there another way? Is there a support person they feel comfortable with?

Those things matter.

The relationships we build with our patients are a testament to their health journey. That cultural intelligence needs to be at the forefront in health, not just an afterthought.

The nurse practitioner role is still evolving in people’s minds. I can do a full-on consult, and some people still ask, ‘Can I see the doctor now?’ But then families come back and say, ‘I didn’t know you could look after my family that way.’

I don’t like to say we’re like doctors because we’re not. We practice similarly, but nursing brings a whole different care model. It is holistic. It is about trust.

When I moved to Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley, I wanted to serve my people. But it was also about inspiring up-and-coming nurses to see they can be more, they can push themselves, and work to the full scope of practice.

To Pacific people, or young nurses who see my story and think maybe they could do that too; you can do it. If you see another nurse doing it, then by all means, you can too.

I like to let my work speak for itself. But if this shows one young Pacific nurse that there is a pathway, then that means a lot."

- Catherine Tu’akalau, Nurse Practitioner

Today we celebrate the amazing mamas, grandmothers, aunties, caregivers, and mother figures who walk through our doors every day for their pēpē, fanau, and even their own health and wellbeing. 🌺

We also acknowledge our own hardworking mamas here at Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley, caring for our people with excellence every day - from our clinic rooms, to home visits, and out in the community.

Thank you for leading by example and showing the next generation the importance of care, strength, and wellness. Your love holds our families and communities together every single day.

We also remember the women who paved the way before us and now rest with our Lord - may their legacy continue to guide our families and communities always. 🙏🏽

Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley is pleased to once again collaborate with New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Pacific Connections Team to host the 2026 MFAT Pacific Update in the Hutt Valley region 🌺

Tonight, our Pacific families, community leaders, and local voices from across the Hutt Valley came together for meaningful talanoa and important updates on the work and partnerships happening across the Pacific. Alongside MFAT, attendees also heard from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (Immigration New Zealand), Sport New Zealand, and the Polynesian Health Corridor Programme under Ministry of Health.

Key speakers shared updates across a range of important areas including Pacific priorities, labour mobility, immigration pathways, health initiatives, healthy active learning, and regional partnerships. The evening also provided a valuable opportunity for our communities to ask questions, strengthen connections, and remain informed on the work supporting Pacific peoples both here in Aotearoa and across the islands.

Fa’afetai to all attendees and partners for contributing to an engaging and collaborative evening. 🤝🏽

Eczema is a common skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin and often affects a lot of children and adults.

In Aotearoa’s colder seasons, symptoms can worsen due to cold air and indoor heating, making flare-ups more frequent.

In busy Pacific households, managing triggers at home is important for protecting the wellbeing of you and your aiga. Early care can help prevent complications and keep families well through the seasons. 🍂

Common triggers can include:
➡️Temperature & environment – Cold weather, indoor heating, and sudden changes
➡️Irritants & chemicals – Soaps, detergents, perfumes, and chlorine
➡️Fabrics & materials – Wool or synthetic clothing
➡️Lifestyle & allergens – Stress, fatigue, food sensitivities (e.g. cow’s milk), dust, pollen, and animal dander

Symptoms to watch for:
➡️Itchy, dry, inflamed skin – Often worse at night, with redness or cracking
➡️Flare-ups – Periods of worsening symptoms lasting days to weeks, affecting one or more areas

You should seek prompt medical advice if you notice:
➡️Signs of infection or worsening symptoms - Weeping or crusted skin, yellow or white spots/pimples, sudden flare-ups, or painful/blistered skin
➡️Feeling unwell - Fever or shivering

🚨If you or someone in your aiga is struggling to manage eczema during the colder months, reach out to our team to discuss a personalised care management plan. We’re here to support you.
