As the weather warms and the sun shines, we’ll be seeing lots of people heading off to do the Great Walks of NZ this summer. 🚶🏻‍♂️🚶🏽‍♀️

If this is you and you're prone to blisters, remember to do plenty of practice hikes, use appropriate footwear, wear good quality socks, and try out a product such as Hiker's wool to help prevent blisters and skin breaks. 👣

Summer is just around the corner 🌞 and we have some tips to help you prepare your feet for the sun, beaches and hikes 👣

1. Sun protection - Even though it's not quite summer yet, it's important to be mindful of sun protection year-round. Our feet are often forgotten when it comes to sun protection, yet the skin on our feet is highly susceptible to melanoma and other skin cancers. Use a high-SPF sunscreen before heading outdoors in your jandals, and be sure to reapply after dipping your toes in the water.

2. Good sandals or jandals - As the weather warms up, we tend to switch our footwear for something a little more breezy. Something contoured to provide arch support with secure straps will be comfortable and decrease the stress placed on your feet. We stock in the clinic!

3.Cuticle oil - cuticle oil will hydrate the cuticles keeping the skin and nails supple , toughen weak and vulnerable nail plates and increase circulation to keep your nails healthy and looking great.

4. Debridement - use a foot file or pumice to gently remove any build-up of dead skin around your feet. Be sure to do this when your feet are dry - not in the shower!

5. Moisturise - moisturise, moisturise moisturise! This will help keep your skin hydrated, healthy and less susceptible to cracking. Not all moisturisers are equal - different active ingredients will have different effects, so be sure to ask your podiatrist for advice on the best kind for your skin type and any problems you wish to address.

👟🌸Time for Your Spring Shoe Check-Up🌸👟

As the weather warms up and we become more active, Spring is the perfect time to check whether your shoes are still supporting you properly. Worn out shoes can increase your risk of injury and discomfort, especially if you're walking, running, or spending long hours on your feet. Giving your shoes a "Shoe Warrant of Fitness" helps ensure they're still up to the task.

1. Check the Upper

The upper is the part of the shoe that covers the top of your foot. It should hold your foot snugly without being tight or loose. If you notice any tearing, stretching, or signs of wear around the toe box, it could be a sign your foot is moving too much inside the shoe. This often happens if the shoe no longer fits properly or if it isn’t the right width for your foot shape.

2. Check the Midsole

The midsole is where most of your cushioning and support comes from. It’s usually made from foam and is responsible for absorbing shock and adding bounce when you move. Over time, the midsole can compress and lose its structure, resulting in a soft, flat feel. This can lead to reduced stability and poor shock absorption, increasing your risk of strain or injury.

3. Check the Outsole

The outsole is the bottom part of your shoe that contacts the ground. It provides traction and grip to prevent slipping. A worn out outsole may have smooth patches or thinning areas, especially around the heel and forefoot. If the tread is worn down or uneven, it’s likely time to replace your shoes.

If you're unsure whether your shoes are still suitable, we’re here to help. Book a footwear check-up with one of our podiatrists for personalised advice. We can assess both your shoes and your feet to help keep you comfortable, supported, and injury free this Spring.

To make an appointment, call us on 04 499 8103.

Dry, cracked heels are common in Spring and can be uncomfortable or even painful. Especially when the sun is shining and you want to wear sandals! 🌞

Prevention mostly comes down to consistent care and avoiding habits or conditions that cause the skin to dry out or thicken excessively.

Daily foot hygiene is an important step in prevention, we recommend washing your feet daily using moisturising bodywash and warm (not hot) water and making sure to dry thoroughly between toes and around the feet. You may also gently exfoliate using a foot file a few times a week. We love the Hanami Glass Foot File - we stock this in the clinic.

Don’t forget to moisturise! Use a thick, oil-based foot cream or heel balm (containing urea or lactic acid) after bathing and before bed. You can also wear cotton socks after moisturising to lock in moisture overnight. We recommend the Gehwol Lipidro Cream, Salve for Cracked skin and Callus Cream, as well as the Restorate Revive Foot and Heel balm which has 30% Urea. We stock these and more in our clinic.

If home treatments haven’t helped after a couple of weeks, or your skin is deeply cracked, bleeding, or painful call us on 04 4998103 to book an appointment to see our podiatrists.

We now have our Foot Care Therapist Katrina taking on clients for appointments. ✨

But what is a Foot Care Therapist, you might be asking yourself? 🤔

A Foot Therapist is a person who is trained in, and provides, skin and nail care within our clinic. They will usually have a nursing, beauty therapy, healthcare or medical background and will undergo continuous professional development as a Foot Therapist.

During an appointment your Foot Therapist will trim, shape and file nails, as well as sanding, to reduce any areas of hard rough skin. We also have the option to add on a 15 minute foot scrub, which is removed with hot towels and/or a 15 minute nail polish application.

You can see our Foot Therapist for prevention of ingrown toenails and corns, however they cannot treat these. If they are painful, you will need to see a Podiatrist. If your Foot Therapist feels you require podiatry-level care, they will advise you of this.

If this interests you, book now! Call 044998103

Our Foot Therapist Katrina has appointments every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
