Craniowaves - Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Liz Kirkman

Craniowaves - Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Liz Kirkman Craniowaves offers Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. BCST is a non-manipulative touch based therapy t The system is held in a non-judgemental, neutral way.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy respects the knowledge that we grew ourselves from a collection of cells. Through informed touch a practitioner assists the body's natural state of repair. This work stems from Osteopathy and has a rich basis in anatomy, however is non-manipulative. Clients have reported finding it particularly useful for balancing the central nervous system and our 'fight or flight

' response which is aggravated in many of us, due to the stresses of our 21st century lives. The client remains fully clothed, lying on their back as the practitioner cradles certain parts of the body, depending on what they system requires - it could be the ankles, the head, the sacrum/tailbone. Through informed touch, the practitioner is able to facilitate changes in their client's system. These changes are paced at the priority of the client, rather than a 'here's where you're broken, I'm going to fix you' mentality. The practitioner listens to the whole, so often changes are global - even though you've come in with a knee issue, the hip and shoulder and perhaps the cranial base might have had to make adjustments before the knee can really release. Empowerment and a renegotiation with their own health occurs, which can express itself in a variety of ways from sleeping, to shaking, to crying, to deep relaxation and bliss. As it really appreciates this type of contact, shifts are often occurring in many parts of the body simultaneously or in quick succession. The body is given the opportunity to release what it no longer needs to carry.

Client comment of the day - "Slept 7.5 hours. No Afib. Heart beat so quiet that I thought it wasn't going anymore (and that was fine). Legs feel normal this morning. First morning for months to get out of bed and feel great!

Thanks Liz. I am so grateful."

Been seeing someone who's been having awful bouts of atrial fibrillation (AF) - sometimes lasting days on end. Often waking in the night and unable to calm themselves down. An active person, they've had lethargy in limbs, sometimes not being able to get out of bed, let alone keep up with their squat routines. Only getting a few hours sleep a night. They have all the tools - but it can be incredibly hard to come back from. We are mammals and regulatory beings - and sometimes we need that co-regulation to help us get back on track.

Steve was one of the founders of the Body Intelligence training, who I learnt from and continue to teach with. I was privileged to work with him in 2014, on a craniosacral PG; Working with Emotions: Heart, Belly and Throat.

His distillation, the OMG technique; Orient, Move, Ground, has just been highlighted in The Guardian. So important to remember how we must create safety - we are mammals first and foremost and need to get ourselves out of threat. Conscious and unconscious. Such a big part of what I support clients with.

Old parts of the brain do run, jump, fight or shutdown. They do not do Shakespeare, Mozart, Turing or complex concepts in general.

They respond to simple stimuli; Orienting, Moving, Grounding, OMG.

My favourites to teach clients: slow head turning, really slow head turning, feeling power in the limbs by pushing and squeezing, tuning into the size and shape of the feet. It still amazes me how often feet feel tiny and far away.

‘Old parts of the brain’ means old in terms of evolution. Brains got bigger and more complex by adapting what was already there. Deep in our nervous system, we have reflexes that originated from reptiles and mammals.

Researchers also use ‘critter brain’, ‘primitive brain’, ‘reflex brain’ or ’quick brain’. All these descriptors tell us the old brain is not a talking, reflective, abstract concepts kind of place.

Feeling and moving your way out of trauma responses is almost certainly a better strategy than trying to remember or understand the events that may have triggered protective reflexes.

Kohekohe; imbibing my first tea of it for mental wellness. I'm here to do the deeper mahi. Something arose up from me today that first appeared to be acknowledged 14 years ago. Another layer of it arrived today in a very strong way.

This then allowed for an innately powerful connection with a fellow tauira. Then we ended the day with another transformative presentation, that had me invoke one of my other loves; singing. A very special day.

I'm continually inspired by these amazing tauira, tau pūkenga and curated campus of Te Wānanga o Raukawa. (Not to mention the kai!)

Whāea Rita harvested some kūmarahou for me at our last Rongoā noho. I've been meaning to make a syrup for my 2 year old's chesty cough, but it hadn't happened. It is bitter - a restorative tonic. Rich with not only medicine from my land; tulsi gifted and planted at home from Auckland (thanks Haidee), lemons, oregano (that once lived in Wellington), kawakawa, foraged thyme from Otago, local Rosemary and many other treats.

Here's to healing with and from the land.

As I was photographing the bottles, my 2 year old says, 'that's me!' That's us!' I think it's part of his making sense. Gathering firewood he's been finding Mum, Dad, and brother pinecones - but of course - more than that. This IS us. We are connected to all living things and as I honour that which I have gathered to prepare this powerful potion.

I honour all the herbalists/Rongoā practitioners before me.

Daw. When you get to daycare and he's flat. Then, after a massive sleep, wakes up with a cough that's upsetting him and wants to sleep some more. Sorry team, but I can't treat my usual Tues/Wed. I'll be in Welly Thu/Fri this week. Perhaps that might work for some others of you - bookings open.

There's nothing quite Iike honouring the indigineity of the whenua/land you are on. I'm so thankful to be a tauira/student/voyager of Heke Rongoā 2025 at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. A place where the wairua/spirit is deeply nourished and the mahi/work is embedded through a sense of whanaungatanga/kinship. Not only am I learning from the amazing pūkenga/tutors, but from the incredibly experienced and varied tauira too. Some might say the tohu/signs are with me and my glowing chin. My cup is full.

New things are afoot. A play, a launch of Thermomix and studying Rongoā.

I know it's very hard to see a Somatic Experiencing practitioner in Wellington.

Have you considered BCST?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy/cranio is often a silent therapeutic relationship - but not always.

As a performer, I've spent decades working on communication, also training in NLP and Brain Based Coaching. I feel confident and comfortable helping support clients when somatic trauma may arise in sessions; not just to hold it physically, but support embodiment through acknowledging verbally too. This seems to be the key difference that a practitioner of both for decades reflects upon:

"The verbal skills that an SE practitioner develops are more visible and often more immediately impactful than the softer, subtler experience of BCST. The language of sensation that SE practitioners speak fluently can take years to master, as can the palpation and perceptual skills of experienced BCST practitioners."

Thanks to the School of Inner Health for that post.
