I have genuinely stopped to compliment a stranger on their magnificent veins.

They were the most glorious veins I had ever seen.

So what makes a vein great?

♥️Sometimes it’s just down to genetics!
♥️Exercise and keeping active can also help.
♥️Hydration is key for excellent, accessible veins.

Whilst having great veins does make it easier to donate blood and plasma, people with more petite veins can often still donate blood like absolute champions too 🕺

It’s Monday which means it’s also Reo Rāhina - where we share kupu Māori all to do with blood transfusion services.

Todays kupu:
Aroha

Aroha is love, empathy, compassion, care, affection - it’s the action of showing up and connecting with others.

‘Aroha tētahi ki tētahi’ means to give aroha unconditionally, one to another, always, in all things.

Donating blood, plasma or platelets is an altruistic action guided by aroha, about the care and compassion for people in our community.

Kia ora to all our amazing lifesavers, we have so much aroha, respect and awe for you.

It’s always important to know you’re loved and appreciated.

We may not be as intense with our appreciation as this cat is for sneakers, but we do want to say thank you to all our donors for your amazing, life-changing actions 🧡

Shout out to Ashleigh for her milestone donation!
Any guesses on how many life saving donations she’s achieved? (Hint: it’s in the triple figures)

And special mention for Kobe: thank you for joining us at the donor centre too, your enthusiasm for NZ Blood paraphernalia was a joy and we’ll be delighted to have you as a donor when you turn 16 (blood donation themed birthdays are a thing, right??)

Chris Hipkins, New Zealand Labour Party Leader dropped into the Wellington Donor Centre yesterday to donate plasma with his fiancé - seasoned plasma donor Toni Grace.

Toni inspired Chris to become a plasma donor - and she completed her 58th plasma donation (63rd donation overall!)

Plasma donated in Aotearoa is turned into 11 different lifesaving medications:
💊 immunoglobulin products which replace a patient’s antibodies or modulate their immune system
💊 volume expanders - to help patients, especially after blood loss
💊 clotting factors which help prevent life-threatening bleeding and damage caused by bleeding.

A plasma donation usually takes between 60-90 minutes (including the health questionnaire, interview with the nurse, and the donation itself - you get to snack during the donation with this one!)

Can you donate an hour of your time to help change someone’s lifetime?

It’s our first Reo Rāhina for 2026 - that’s where we share kupu Māori all to do with blood transfusion services!

Today, our word is
Ohotata
or
Mate whawhati tata
which means emergency.

More than 20% of blood products in Aotearoa are used to treat patients in accidents and emergency situations, so ohotata is very important kupu.

Let us know if there’s any kupu you’d like us to share. We are always looking to improve our reo 💕 Mā te wā!
