Tino kino te pai Beth! It’s been a huge privilege having Beth as one of our volunteers for longer than we’ve been a national Blood Service!

35 years, 30,000+ cups of tea and coffee, and part of the donation process for 1000s of donors 🥰

It’s apheresis awareness day!

The purpose of Apheresis Awareness Day is to raise awareness of apheresis medicine and honor the many donors, patients, scientists, technicians, and health care professionals who are part of the process!

Our plasma and platelet donors are our amazing apheresis donors - Apheresis is a process in which a machine removes part of the blood (plasma, platelets, stem cells or granulocytes) from a person’s bloodstream then returns the rest to the body. 💕

Have you seen our new campaign? It features our wonderful plasma donors from across the motū giving their lifesaving liquid gold 💛💛💛

So many patients rely on plasma and plasma derived products. It can be lifesaving, or life-changing, giving people a new lease on life 💕

In the Wellington region, you can donate plasma at our Newtown Donor Centre Monday to Friday (with the occasional Saturday!), and we have plasma appointments available in Lower Hutt on Thursdays and Fridays. Book your appointment at nzblood.co.nz

We’re hoping to add to the plasma donation locations soon (looking at you Porirua 😘), to make donating plasma more accessible for people!

Ngā mihi nui to all our amazing lifesavers giving blood, plasma, and platelets - you make such a huge difference in our community 💕

And a special thank you to Ikara, our glamorous plasma model in this poster, and one of our wonderful Wellington-based lifesavers!

Honestly I think everyone who works here is a huge fan - we’re in an incredibly privileged position of knowing our mahi makes a difference, getting to interact with lifesavers, and seeing how blood transfusion services help patients every day 💕

It’s our birthday!

27 years ago, NZ Blood was created as an integrated blood transfusion service; looking after blood products from vein-to-vein (from the donor all the way through to the recipient).

Thank you to all the donors, patients, whānau and friends who put their trust in us - it is a huge privilege.

Things have changed a lot in the last 27 years. Our organisation has grown and the need for different blood components has changed too!

Surgical advancements (keyhole surgery etc), and treatments using plasma - especially intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), has meant that in the last 10-15 years we’ve had a big shift from focusing on whole blood to plasma too.

We are looking forward to seeing what changes over the next 27 years and celebrating these changes with you 💕

It’s the last day of Sweat with Pride for 2025 and our team has met our fundraising goal 🎉
The money raised will help out Rainbow charities in Aotearoa: Rainbow Youth, OutLine and inside out, who provide life changing and life saving support 💕

To celebrate the last day of Sweat With Pride, we dressed up in our best sweats (and brightest activewear), and baked up sweet treats for our sweaty colleagues.

Kia ora everyone who made lifesaving donations during blood donor week - we’re so glad we had the chance to celebrate you and everything you do for patients in Aotearoa.

Even though National Blood Donor Week has ended, our appreciation won’t!

Every day, our team, doctors, nurses, carers, patients, whānau and friends across the motū celebrate your life changing donations.

Whether you’re giving blood, plasma or platelets, you make a difference to so many lives. Thank you for your koha.

When you see yourself as a superhero or an average Joe - you are a lifesaver, and you’re remarkable.

Bella is going above and beyond to gain the title of lifesaver 💕

A recent nursing grad of 6 months, Bella has been saving lives in the Emergency Department through her mahi.

Bella has both donated blood and plasma. Today she’s completed her 6th life-giving donation! This whole blood donation can help save up to 3 lives.

Kia ora Bella!

Shout-out to one of our incredible lifesavers: Firefighter Remko has donated blood products over a hundred times. He’s an all-round hero.

Last month he also completed the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge to raise funds for the charity Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. Altogether they raised nearly two million dollars! This will help fund the charity’s support for patients and their whānau, and funding further research into treatments and cures.

As part of the challenge, Remko carried a photo of a young scientist who died 21 months after being diagnosed with blood cancer. The photo is a tribute to the patient, honouring their life and cancer journey.

Every day, eight New Zealanders are diagnosed with blood cancer or a blood-related condition.
Over a quarter of all blood products donated in Aotearoa are used to treat patients with cancer, and many people with blood cancer need regular blood transfusions to help save their lives, or give them some precious extra time.

Whether Remko is donating blood products to ensure patients receive the treatments they need, fighting fires and promoting fire safety, or climbing 1,267 steps to raise money for charity, we are lucky to have heroes like him in our community.
