What is empathy and how can we demonstrate it?

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It's a way of emotionally connecting with others and being able to see things from their perspective. Empathy is an important skill to have because it helps us build stronger relationships, be more understanding and supportive of others, and it’s how we can create a more compassionate and caring society.
One way to demonstrate empathy is to actively listen to the other person and through that process try to understand their perspective. This involves paying attention to what they are saying, asking questions to clarify their thoughts and feelings, and avoiding interrupting or judging them. It's also important to validate the other person's emotions and show that you are there for them. Some ways to do this include using phrases like "I can see how that would make you feel" or "It sounds like you're going through a tough time."

We have some spaces available for free counselling sessions (for individuals) with Mathew.

This is standard counselling, therefore it does not have to be relationship focused.

Zero cost counselling

For those people who may be seeking help from a troubling level of anxiety or for those who are trying to cope with a relationship ending, depression, loneliness, or uncertainty about the future, Mathew Minnear, currently studying counselling at Weltec may be able to help.
Mathew is part of the team at The Relationship Clinic and he can provide
support and understanding at no cost, for those who may be struggling with some of those issues...

Also, for those in the LGBT+ community who may wish to explore and understand their own identity more fully, or who may be considering coming out and would like some assistance in figuring out how best to do this, or who are trying to cope with family and societal pressures, Mathew is available to listen, to discuss and to provide support.

Mathew’s caring, easy going style provides a safe, open and non-judgmental environment, enabling those he works with to express themselves safely, feel understood, and to develop their own solutions to problems they may face.
As we have mentioned above, Mathew is willing to offer his services at no cost. Should you wish he will accept a Koha.

Hi all,

My name is Mathew and I'm delighted to be working as a counsellor-in-training with Hal Kennedy and The Relationship Clinic this year.

I am inviting individual clients to a non-judgemental, safe and confidential space with support available to help resolve issues that may be affecting their lives.

Initially I’m offering counselling sessions at absolutely no cost, which generally equates to totally free.

A little bit about me: I am 23 years old and was born and raised in the Coromandel. As Hal has mentioned, I am a second year counselling student at Weltec and I have also studied graphic design. I am currently working with School's Out as a volunteer group facilitator. I am passionate about mental health, nutrition and social justice.

If you or anybody you know may benefit from the service that I am offering, or any of Hal's services, please feel free to pass this information on and / or share this post. Sessions can be booked by calling 0800 488 499 or email relationships@outlook.co.nz.
