BEGIN AGAIN

If you’re feeling that post-winter, early spring dullness then it can be super helpful to change part of your morning routine to refresh your body-mind.

With a nod to Zen Buddhism, as to how to start again with a Beginner’s Mind this spring, finish this sentence 3 times without thinking too hard about it.

If I weren’t so ___ I would love to try ___.

This little exercise will give you a hint as to a new direction you yearn to go but are refraining from trying out.

Wherever you find yourself in life, you can start again, just be sure to start small.

Start something, anything.

Starting something new is never a waste of time because even if you quit or “fail” you have refreshed the air in a stuffy corner of your mind.

REM + NEURONAL PRUNING

During our sleeping hours our brain has the opportunity to assess neural connections, strengthening those used frequently and pruning those that are less frequently used.

Pruning is crucial for memory consolidation, as it helps to eliminate less important or temporary memories and strengthen the relevant ones.

REM sleep is particularly important for pruning and maintaining new synapses formed during learning and development, and continues throughout adult life.

We go through about 3-5 REM cycles during the night, with each cycle lasting an average of 90 minutes. This can be why some of us wake up every couple of hours.

The important thing to know is that it’s not something to worry about, it’s simply the end of a sleep cycle.

Once we know this we can be at ease with waking in the night and this allows us to fall back into another cycle without unnecessary rumination.

Here are some of our fav remedies and rituals for deep rest and cognitive support.

AS WITHIN, SO WITHOUT

Poor gut health influences inflammatory skin conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Interestingly, this gut-skin axis is bidirectional, meaning that skin conditions can also affect gut health, creating a cycle of inflammation and dysbiosis.

An imbalance in the gut microbiome (dysbiosis) can lead to inflammation and various skin conditions, including:
Eczema
Psoriasis
Rosacea
Acne vulgaris
Seborrheic dermatitis
Poor wound healing

Understanding the gut-skin axis gives us new insight (confirming old wisdom) into the role our diet and digestion has in treating skin conditions.

By supporting the gut microbiome with probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary changes, we can restore the gut and thereby improve the skin. Vice versa, in caring for the skin we break the cycle.

RENEWED LIGHTNESS

Dandelion is well known and loved medicinal plant, conventionally categorised as a w**d.

Many of us had the experience as children of blowing the puffball seed head while making a wish and sending the seeds out into the wind.

Dandelion is a humble yet enchanting plant that uplifts the mind and lightens the load of a heavy, lethargic body.

With its gentle cleansing qualities, it encourages us to gradually and gently shed our burdens in order to glow with lightness, radiance and renewed joy.

Dandelion can be a helpful reminder that we need to dissolve old ways of thinking, doing and being, in order to welcome in fresh energy and innovation.

How do you like your dandelion?

“The young leaves may also be boiled as a vegetable, spinach fashion, thoroughly drained, sprinkled with pepper and salt, moistened with soup or butter and served very hot. If considered a little too bitter, use half spinach, but the Dandelion must be partly cooked first in this case, as it takes longer than spinach. As a variation, some grated nutmeg or garlic, a teaspoonful of chopped onion or grated lemon peel can be added to the greens when they are cooked.” – Mrs M. Grieve, A Modern Herbal

DRAW IT OUT WORKSHOP

You will be guided by Lara Phillips, a trained creative facilitator in Interactive Drawing Therapy, through drawing prompts (similar to a guided meditation or journaling) to draw out where you are at and draw out your own inner guidance.

No art skills are needed, more simple mark making.

This gentle yet powerful tool uses drawing and writing as a way to access your subconscious and to listen to your heart rather than your head for guidance. A tool often used in therapy, it is made accessible for self-care and community wellness through these workshops.

Complimentary herbal tea and chocolate provided. All attendees take home a gift bag including a Draw It Out booklet of prompts and some Wellington Apothecary goodies.

“We all have the wisdom within to help ourselves, if given the space.”

SELF PRESERVATION

The natural world makes decisions about self-preservation based on what is best for each organism to conserve energy and survive the long winters.

Deciduous trees decided that it is best to lose their leaves and go dormant to conserve energy, at the cost of producing any energy in winter.

Whereas evergreen trees decided that it is best to hold onto their leaves and make the most of any sunlight that is available in winter to maintain energy production.

Here are some questions for you to ponder for your own style of self-preservation.
