Acupuncture treatment for insomnia based on the microbiome–gut–brain axis theory: A review

Conclusion
The Microbiome Gut Brain axis plays an important part in the onset and progression of insomnia. Currently, the main pathways identified to improve insomnia include the immune, neuroendocrine, vagus nerve, and bidirectional information transmission pathways dominated by gut microbiota metabolites. Existing evidence indicates that acupuncture treatment can inhibit inflammation, improve the tight connectivity of the intestinal mucosal barrier, adjust the release and production of brain–gut peptides, regulate HPA axis-related pathways, and control the vagus nerve pathway, thereby alleviating insomnia symptoms.

Chronic or acute pain can have huge ramifications on a persons quality of life, and the kicker is.. often it cannot be seen from the outside. 🥹

We hear hundreds of stories of different types of pain experiences, and it is probably one of the main drivers for people to come in and see us.

PAIN can be a complicated thing.. but if it is something you are struggling with, then reach out and see if acupuncture may be a PART of the solution or management of your condition. We sincerely hope so.

CARPAL TUNNEL

How Acupuncture Helps (Biomedical View)

1. Reduces inflammation around the median nerve

Studies show acupuncture can:

Lower local inflammatory markers

Reduce swelling and pressure inside the carpal tunnel

Improve blood microcirculation

This can decrease nerve irritation and relieve numbness or tingling.

2. Releases tight forearm and wrist flexor muscles

Many people with CTS have:

Tight flexor muscles

Myofascial trigger points

Fascial tension pulling on the carpal tunnel

Acupuncture relaxes:

Pronator teres

Palmaris longus

Flexor digitorum superficialis

Flexor carpi radialis/ulnaris

Releasing these can reduce compression through the wrist.

3. Modulates the nervous system

Acupuncture:

Calms overactive pain pathways

Improves nerve conduction

Helps the median nerve “glide” more freely

Some studies show improvements similar to splinting and NSAIDs.

4. Improves blood flow to the nerve

Better circulation supports nerve healing and reduces night-time symptoms.

A great treatment to try for muscle and tendon issues is 'gua sha' a traditional 'scraping' technique, whereby a special stone tool is stroked many times along the pain area, until little red dots appear. Like cupping, it can look intense, but is generally quite comfortable.

Gua sha can be included in massages with Eileen or Hernan, or with any of our acupuncture staff.

See you soon!
