The 12th of May marks the birth of Florence Nightingale, who was the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale significantly improved the acceptance of female participation in the workforce and laid the foundation for professional nursing, which is why we celebrate Nurses Day on the anniversary of her birthday.

Te Hopai wants to thank and celebrate our own courageous dedicated nurses, as well as those everywhere in the world. Thank you for your service.

Letter received from a family member and staff

Dear Te Hopai Home and Hospital,

On behalf of my entire family, I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for the exceptional care and support you provided to our mother, Amna Khan, during her time with you. The kindness and compassion shown to her by the staff at Te Hopai were truly remarkable and made a profound impact on all of us.

The care that our mother received during the final stages of her life was exceptional, and we are deeply grateful for the support provided to both our mother and our family during this difficult time. Your staff went above and beyond to ensure that our mother was comfortable, cared for, and treated with the utmost dignity and respect.

We were especially touched by the care and attention shown to our mother during her final moments. The staff at Te Hopai handled her passing with the utmost grace and compassion, providing comfort and support to both our mother and our family during this difficult time.

As a member of the Te Hopai staff, I have always been proud to be a part of such an incredible team, but the care and support shown to my mother have truly exceeded our expectations. The impact of your team's work on our family will never be forgotten, and we will always be grateful for the kindness and compassion shown to our mother.

Once again, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything that you have done for our mother and our family. We are truly blessed to have had the opportunity to have her cared for by the amazing staff at Te Hopai.

Sincerely,

Zubeda Intaz and the descendants of Amna Khan

Te Hopai proudly supports the NZ Police Managers Guild Trust, an organisation focussing on a crime free New Zealand.
Established in 1997 as a charitable trust, the Police Managers’ Guild Trust provides straightforward, useful information that helps people avoid becoming victims of crime and works toward a safer community for you, your families and your businesses.
The Trust achieves this by educating communities through the use of its digital platforms including this website, social media, newsletters and through strategic partnerships with the business community.
Educational resources are published every day of the week tackling issues such as substance abuse, domestic abuse, better parenting, crime prevention, child safety and building safer communities together.
On average, over 3,000 Kiwis make use of our crime prevention education resources every week! This is made possible with thanks to over 20,000 local businesses, which have supported the Trust through sponsorship and advertising. The money raised from advertisers helps with the production and distribution of the education as well as the ongoing development of our crime prevention education resources.
Additionally, the Police Managers’ Guild Trust has returned in excess of 3.5 million dollars to New Zealand community organisations that either work to prevent crime or help the victims of crime.

Recently Te Hopai Trust Board celebrated the role our Volunteers play in enriching the lives of our Residents.

Welcome Te Hopai extended family and friends - especially Te Hopai volunteers
I too am a Te Hopai volunteer - year 23 on The Te Hopai Board - year 2 as Chair
On behalf of the Te Hopai Board I would like to express our appreciation for your valuable contribution.
We are grateful for the energy, enthusiasm and dedication you bring to your roles as volunteers for Te Hopai
You make our mission that much smoother. The best gift you can give is your time.
We are truly thankful

The Chair also addressed fellow Trustees at the Board Christmas function

Te Hopai - Christmas talk from the Chair at the final Board meeting and dinner for 2022
Tena Koutou, Tena Koutou, Tena Koutou Katoa
Nau mai Haere mai Te Hopai Whanau whanui eh hoe Welcome Te Hopai extended family and friends
I have a brief few words from The Chair before we start dinner
Firstly I would like specifically to welcome some new faces
3 new board members - Relatively new
Cheryl & Mike - here tonight - and Angelique who unfortunately got Covid eliminated today.
All 3 joined us at the AGM in August. Each were hand-picked to provide specific skill to the board and have all adjusted in very nicely.
But we also have 3 departures from the board
Loraine - 25 years on the board - 6 years as Chair. Lorraine’s willingness to challenge and tackle the thorny issues will be missed however on that she has taught us all that challenging and tackling the thorny issues is a big part of why we are on the board
Dave - 18 years on the board. Dave wrote his own Job Description for the role of Managing Director and constantly over-achieved it.
Rory – a relative new-comer to the board but in that time made a significant contribution and impact. We are all excited for him for his massive new career move but very disappointed it precludes him from being on our Board.
In addition Tracy - revolutionised our financials. From what Tracy started with to where we are now - transformational.
And thank you to Pakize and her team
Outstanding
Head & heart management
Caring and skilled
Covid continues to feature dominantly in all our lives - age care continues to be at the sharp end - timely words as we have a Covid situation Pakize and team are dealing with at the moment
Pakize and her team lead the pack with operating techniques able to ensure the safety of our most vulnerable community
A Star team lead by its inspirational captain and Jill her fantastic 2IC
Thank you to our team of support professionals
Johnathan Crawford, our Trust lawyer
Dr Dave Pickett
Dr Andrea Crighton
Dr Rowena Sosich
All of you play a key role in our success - we are truly grateful

Simon Wallace - is included in that. Simon does excellent job of representing the Age Care sector Also our group of volunteers - I had the pleasure of joining at their thank you drinks last week. Their passion for Te Hopai is infectious
My fellow Board - We have great board
Diverse
Strong
Bold
Forward thinking
And above all - Caring
This is a board who is not afraid to
tackle the big issues
face challenges
Innovate
back themselves
I am truly grateful to be chair for such a great team
I would also like to acknowledge the former board members here tonight - Euan & Doug - Each of you have stamped your own mark on the board and have contributed to what Te Hopai is today
I would now like to invite Bill our Kamatua to provide the blessing for our meal
Kia Ora - nga mihi pai cheers & best wishes
Deano Riddell

We recognise and value the incredible work our Te Hopai Volunteers do. Recently we held a Volunteers Appreciation Evening, providing a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to meet each other and be thanked personally by Board Members and management.
The highlight of the evening was some of our volunteers performing;
Rosie Knight who sings opera to our residents each week kindly offered to perform a few songs, followed by the Whakaahuru Singers who provide comfort to people near the end of life with gentle, soothing songs.
A great opportunity to mingle with each other and learn what everyone brings to Te Hopai to make it the place it is.
Many thanks

Aged care organisation behind elderly Jacinda Ardern billboard pleads for urgent change.
The organisation behind a billboard showing an aged version of Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson said they resorted to the PR stunt to raise awareness of the need for nurses after their pleas for the immigration system to change fell on deaf ears.
Nearly 1000 aged care beds have been lost this year and the sector is blaming chronic underfunding, rising costs and harsh immigration settings.
By 2030, it is estimated another 12,000 to 16,000 aged care beds will be needed, which is as many beds as there are in the entire public hospital network, Aged Care Matters said.
Newshub revealed on Wednesday that since July, the Government has signed off on employers to recruit 1097 aged care nurses from overseas. While 95 nurses have applied and 69 have been approved, only five have arrived in the country.

Tēnā koutou everyone
Firstly, thank you all for letting us know about your Covid-19 status and not visiting when you are unwell. We are introducing a few welcome changes to visiting.

To make visiting easier for you we have stopped the booking system. Appointments are no longer required to visit. Our opening hours have also been extended. Doors will be open from 8 am and will automatically lock at 7pm daily. Except in exceptional circumstances, there will be no admittance outside these times.
We continue to welcome visitors through our Owen Street entrance only. Please sign in and out as you come and go.
Lastly, to keep you, your loved ones, and our staff safe, we ask you again that PLEASE wear masks when visiting. Masks must remain on when you are in the facility including the resident’s room. We ask this because it is the best way to protect our vulnerable residents while promoting family/whānau engagement.
Thank you all so much for your ongoing support and stay safe.

Coming to NZ for work
Elainee and Nichelle, from the Philippines, are Registered Nurses who came to NZ and Te Hopai in 2021. Elainee came direct from the Philippines with her husband and 2 daughters, while Nichelle was working in Singapore but was able to reunite with her husband and son when they moved to NZ. They say why they chose Te Hopai and how they feel about NZ one year on.
Here are their stories.

Tēnā koutou everyone
This is to advise you that we have had a further COVID-19 incursion at Te Hopai.
Four residents have tested positive in the hospital wing and one in level 2 Owen Street. These residents are medically stable and isolating in their rooms and individual families/whānau have been notified.
Residents who are asymptomatic can continue their group activities but group gatherings between units will be postponed until we are again COVID-19 free. Medical appointments for residents who require these will continue following negative RAT results.
At this stage, we will be remaining open to visitors’ facility wide (with caution). We will facilitate resident and family/whānau engagement as much as we can at this time. We will continue also with our daily surveillance of staff prior to commencing their shift and residents who become symptomatic. We reserve the right to close areas as necessary (potentially without notice) if it looks as if the virus is spreading.
A few reminders:
We ask again that you PLEASE wear masks when visiting. Masks must remain on when you are in the resident’s room. We do not ask this to be annoying, we ask this because it is the best way to protect our vulnerable residents while promoting family/whānau engagement. Please do not put our staff in the position of having to ask you to wear a mask.
In Hospital and Owen 2 wings visiting is to be in the resident’s room only. Visiting will not be allowed in resident communal areas. Again, this is to prevent any potential spread of the virus.
We are trying to remain ‘open’ as much as we can. This is a reminder that appointments are required to visit; appointments can be organised through https://tehopaibooking.as.me. You must be in the facility before the last appointment on any given day – this is by 4.15pm, except on Tuesday and Thursday (late nights) when you need to be in the facility at 6.45pm. Doors will be locked at 4.30pm/7pm respectively and, except in exceptional circumstances, there will be no admittance.
Plase use our Owen Street entrance only. The Hospital road entrance is permanently closed.
Finally, thank you all so much for your ongoing support for our efforts as we continue to navigate this tricky virus!

Ngā mihi nui
