Was a very bittersweet day last Saturday.
My last proper in person antenatal class for the foreseeable future. The combination of funding finishing and the time I could give getting smaller is why they have stopped. But only in this format! We have been super lucky with the generous funds over the years I've been teaching to keep classes free and really appreciate the support from the DHB, Parents Centre and most recently The Village.
Classes will resume in online do at your own pace modules and I will still do frequent in person workshops that will be just a couple of hours one morning rather than 2 weekends. I haven't been happy that I haven't been able to give 100% so want to step back so this way they can continue with my hectic life in the background.
New classes are not quite ready to launch yet, but bear with, they will be very soon! Will update details as soon as possible ☺️

Admitting that I do not have the time to do everything I want to do on top of a full time job, a family, and a not yet launched side business (exciting info coming soon) is the hardest thing!

Adding more workload means dropping some others because my health (although I do have adhd and my busy brain thrives on the excitement and constant challenges) and family ultimately come first.

Teaching antenatal classes and connecting with people in the perinatal space fills my cup so much which is why it has been hard and so put off admitting and posting that I will need to step back, even slightly!

My March class has been overwhelming with applicants and is completely full. But I have decided to do one more class at the start of May in the same format as it currently is in. Then from then on, I am looking into digitalising it into an online course of modules to do at your own pace at home. The content covered sure is important into informed decisions which I am hugely passionate about and a bit of expectations of what to expect, but also not the only really important thing. Human connection and building your village can sometimes be more important than any of the info you may learn so I will not let this component be missed.

New format tentatively will look like:
- Interactive online learning content to do at your own pace in the form of videos, quizzes games etc
- A class that goes for one Saturday morning every two months or so to meet people in the same boat, have some morning tea, learn some more of the practical hands on things such as breathing techniques, swaddling etc

It's not set in stone yet but this is what I'm currently thinking. Please let me know your thoughts though! As funding is tricky and may not look the same going forward, there may be a small fee for the content and possibly meet up (by small I mean like $10/$20). This also means that the online content is not limited to people in the Eastern Bay who can physically come.

Head on over and check out The Village website too and join the Parenting Hub. There are some incredible other classes and lessons on there as well as reaching out to other parents in the same boat. As cliche as it is, it really does take a village!

Want to learn what this matrescence thing is that you may have heard pop up a bit more often recently? Want to come have a coffee with other parents or soon to be parents that are probably feeling some similar challenging emotions around motherhood? Come along on a Friday morning throughout September where we will discuss topics such as the perfect mother myth and the identity shift.

This is something I am super excited and proud about!
And also something I'm proud that I did while pacing myself which if you know me and my hyperfixations, is very difficult!

I have been incorporating education about matrescence in antenatal classes since the start of the year when I started this incredible course with Matrescence NZ. And now very excited to start incorporating more and bringing in person matrescence support. Watch this space Whakatāne, I've got a cool wee drop in group going throughout September and will be posting details later during the week :)
