Nau mai, Haere mai! Please join us at a community hui next week to discuss the recent changes to the maternity service at Ko Matariki Maternity Unit at Whakatāne Hospital.

The hui is next Thursday (30 January) from 5-6pm at Acacia House.

We encourage the community to attend and hear from Health New Zealand as well as raise any issues or concerns you may have about the change. This is an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on how we can best meet the local needs and reinstate obstetric and gynecology care in Whakatāne.

We know how much the community values access to this level of care, and Health New Zealand is committed to returning to secondary birthing services as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you there. For more details about the changes head here 👉 http://spr.ly/6189xB4gW

From mid-January 2025, Whakatāne Hospital will temporarily move to a primary birthing service while we recruit specialist staff.

What does this mean?
🔹 A full midwife-based service will remain available for women/pregnant people who are likely to have an uncomplicated birth.

🔹 However, if you need or are likely to need help from a doctor with your birth, you will need to give birth at Tauranga Hospital.

🔹 While you are pregnant, your care will continue at Whakatāne Hospital with the support of Tauranga specialists.

We have not taken this decision lightly and have tried all options to keep the service going. The clinical safety for women/pregnant people and babies is our key priority while we find specialist staff.

We know how much the community values this care, and Health New Zealand is fully committed to resuming full services as soon as possible.

If you’re pregnant and don’t yet have a midwife, please book now at http://spr.ly/6180vDjgy or call 0800 220 021 to kōrero with a midwife.

More detailed information is available on our website here http://spr.ly/6181vDjgJ

For Whakatāne Hospital Health Care Assistant, Jill Van Der Wouden, Christmas starts early. 🎄

Since July, Jill has been meticulously planning how she will decorate the Surgical Ward at Whakatāne Hospital, and it’s something she has done for the past 18 years.

Her intricate and thoughtful designs – inspired through months of online research and shopping - grace the ward to the delight of patients and whānau.

“It’s just a nice thing to do for patients and their friends and family to enjoy – nobody wants to be in hospital at this time of year, so it helps to lighten the load,” she says.

“I like helping people and this is one simple way I can that.”

Jill’s designs include a snowman that she and her husband made from a fallen tree at home as well as a handmade Christmas tree made from old piping and pots. With the help of her of sister, she’s even had each of the staff’s name printed in individual Christmas baubles.

Thank you, Jill, for your efforts, you truly embody the spirit of Christmas! 🎅

Our Bay of Plenty stroke team has been recognised for delivering outstanding patient care. ❤️

The team has been recognised for having the lowest seven-day mortality rates across the country at a recent National Stroke Network meeting.

“This means that across the motu, if you have a stroke in Bay of Plenty, you are more likely to be alive, living at home and independent," says Dr Jane Molloy, Neurologist/stroke SMO.

“We know that it is our organised stroke unit care that saves lives from stroke. It is great to see the impact of this for our patients."

It has now been a year since the opening of Te Whare o Tāne-Te-Wananga Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) at Tauranga Hospital, which provides a specialised, multidisciplinary approach to treating stroke patients that has been shown to reduce the risk of death and disability.

Ka rawe, team!
