New Zealand is about to make one of the biggest shifts to food labelling weโ€™ve seen in decades โ€” and itโ€™s happening quietly.

MPI is proposing a digital labelling trial that would allow certain mandatory information (like ingredients, allergens, nutrition panels, storage instructions) to be moved off the packet and onto a webpage accessed through a QR code.

Sounds modern.
Sounds convenient.
But hereโ€™s the catch:

The Governmentโ€™s own Product Labelling Review found that:

๐Ÿ”น ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“% ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ said labelling rules already impose unnecessary compliance costs.
๐Ÿ”น Many called the system ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ž๐ง๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐œ๐ž๐.
๐Ÿ”น Accessibility concerns were raised โ€”๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐š ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฉ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ž, ๐๐š๐ญ๐š, ๐จ๐ซ ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.
๐Ÿ”น Mandatory information is ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ซ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐š๐ฐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐›๐ž ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž.

None of those problems are fixed by shifting labels online.

And absolutely ๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐  in this trial requires companies to publish real safety data โ€” no residue testing, no pesticide panels, no AMPA levels, no batch results. Just the same old informationโ€ฆ moved to a website.

If we donโ€™t speak up now, we risk sleepwalking into a system where โ€œtransparencyโ€ becomes dependent on Wi-Fi, battery life, and brand spin.

This is your chance to ask better questions โ€” and insist that food safety doesnโ€™t get diluted in the name of โ€œinnovation.โ€

Letโ€™s make sure digital progress doesnโ€™t replace real transparency.
Your voice matters โ€” especially on something as fundamental as what we feed our families.

๐Ÿ’ฅGood news! Sharing from our friends at No More Glyphosate NZ:

โœ… Victory for Public Health & Transparency

Good news โ€” glyphosate residue limits on wheat, barley, and oats will remain at 0.1mg/kg. Even more importantly, pre-harvest spraying with glyphosate on these grains is no longer permitted in New Zealand.

This decision comes after 3,100+ public submissions and strong evidence that growers and millers have already been moving away from pre-harvest glyphosate use. Now itโ€™s official: the status quo is protected, and our food system takes a step toward greater safety.

Dry peas will see their limit set at 6mg/kg, aligning with international markets โ€” but the real breakthrough here is on our daily staples.
๐Ÿ™Œ This shows the power of public pressure and collective voices.
๐ŸŒพ Our message was clear: glyphosate has no place on food crops right before harvest.
๐Ÿ“ข Letโ€™s keep building momentum โ€” this is just one win in the wider fight.
๐Ÿ‘‰ What do you think this decision means for New Zealandโ€™s food future?
