Karawhiua! Move your tinana in a way that feels good today.

You don’t need a gym or fancy gear to care for your tinana. Hauora starts with small movements - stretching your arms, walking to the letterbox, walking on the beach, dancing with your tamariki, or even just standing outside and breathing deeply. ✨

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week 💚

This year’s theme ‘Top Up Together’ reminds us that hauora isn’t a solo journey; it’s a lifelong journey strengthened through whānau, hapū, and community connection.

In Te Whare Tapa Whā, te taha whānau shows us the power of connection. A kōrero over kai, a shared walk, or a simple check-in can uplift our oranga.

Breast cancer affects too many of our wāhine, our māmā, our nannies, our sisters. Early detection saves lives and screening is one of the most powerful tools we have.

💗 Know your tinana.
💗 Book your mammogram.
💗 Support the wāhine in your life to get screened.

Screening saves lives. If you’re aged 45–69, you’re eligible for a free mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Aotearoa.

Not sure where to start? Visit https://info.health.nz/keeping-healthy/cancer-screening/breast-screening to learn more, find your nearest clinic, or book your appointment.

Let’s protect our wāhine. Let’s protect our whakapapa.

Whooping cough spreads easily by coughing and sneezing. It can move through whānau, kura, and kōhanga quickly.

Together, we can:
✅ Stay up to date with vaccinations
✅ Keep pēpi away from sick whānau
✅ Act fast if there are symptoms.

Let’s care for our pēpi, and keep our whakapapa strong.

Kōrero to your GP, hauora provider, or check Healthpoint to find a vaccinator near you.

Tamariki Māori deserve better oral health care. Not just enrolment, but real access.

Too many of our tamariki are living with dental disease and for Māori, the experience is more severe. More Māori children end up in hospital for treatment that could have been prevented.

📣 “Removal of teeth is high, and prevention is low.”

📣 “People who need it the most fail to come - they need support.”

Most tamariki Māori are enrolled in oral health services but that doesn’t mean they’re being seen. Even when they are, the rates of tooth decay are far higher than for non-Māori.

This isn’t just about brushing or kai. It’s about equity, access, and making sure our whānau aren’t falling through the cracks.

Oral health is whānau health. Prevention starts with real care — not just enrolment. We need to make dental care something they receive, not just something they’re signed up for.

Everyone deserves to feel heard, especially when it comes to health. Whether it’s for your tamariki, your kaumātua, or yourself - your whakaaro matters.

We’re collecting whānau voice to shape how health services are delivered in our rohe.

You can share online in your own time, it only takes a few minutes. 👇🏾

“We have recruitment challenges, and we are a service that can prevent many long-term and chronic health issues for whānau.”

Our hauora workforce needs us — and we need it to reflect us.

Across the BOP, only 6% of doctors in our PHOs are Māori. Nationally, the proportion of Māori doctors sits below 5%, despite Māori making up nearly 18% of the population.

The good news? We’re seeing strong growth in Māori nurses, midwives, dental professionals, sonographers, and allied health kaimahi.

Māori dental hygienists, therapists, and midwives are leading the way.

But key gaps remain:
🔹 Not enough Māori GPs or senior mental health clinicians.
🔹 Not enough training pathways or prescribing rights for nurses.
🔹 Staff shortages in pharmacy, aged care, and primary care.
🔹 Pay parity issues make it hard to recruit and retain skilled kaimahi.

Priority Māori workforces include:
→ Doctors (especially GPs)
→ Mental health clinicians
→ Nurse practitioners & prescribers
→ Pharmacists & Midwives.

We need more Māori in every part of the system. Not just to fill roles, but to lead change.

Hapū māmā, your vaccination is one of the best gifts you can give your pēpi. 💖

➡️ A free whooping cough booster is available from 13 weeks in every pregnancy (best from 16 weeks).
➡️ Your immunity passes through the placenta to protect pēpi until their first vaccines at 6 weeks.
➡️ This protection could save their life.

Ask your midwife, GP, or hauora provider about the free whooping cough vaccine.

Ka tangi te pīpīwharauroa, ko te karere o Mahuru.
When the shining cuckoo calls, he is the messenger of spring.

We are well into Te Whā o Mahuru, the fourth lunar month in the maramataka, ushering in kōanga - the season of planting and preparing.

As the days stretch and the whenua warms, we begin to move away from the hearty, grounding winter kai. Now is the time to lighten our plates, refresh our routines, and set intentions for wellbeing.

Kōanga invites us to:

🌿 Plant seeds, in the māra and in our mind
🌞 Reconnect with te taiao and soak in the returning light
💧 Set wellness goals that nourish us through to Hine Raumati
