“We have recruitment challenges, and we are a service that can prevent many long-term and chronic health issues for whānau.”
Our hauora workforce needs us — and we need it to reflect us.
Across the BOP, only 6% of doctors in our PHOs are Māori. Nationally, the proportion of Māori doctors sits below 5%, despite Māori making up nearly 18% of the population.
The good news? We’re seeing strong growth in Māori nurses, midwives, dental professionals, sonographers, and allied health kaimahi.
Māori dental hygienists, therapists, and midwives are leading the way.
But key gaps remain:
🔹 Not enough Māori GPs or senior mental health clinicians.
🔹 Not enough training pathways or prescribing rights for nurses.
🔹 Staff shortages in pharmacy, aged care, and primary care.
🔹 Pay parity issues make it hard to recruit and retain skilled kaimahi.
Priority Māori workforces include:
→ Doctors (especially GPs)
→ Mental health clinicians
→ Nurse practitioners & prescribers
→ Pharmacists & Midwives.
We need more Māori in every part of the system. Not just to fill roles, but to lead change.
