Check In on Your Hauora | Tiaki i a koe, tiaki i tō whānau

As the year comes to a close, it’s a good time to pause and check in - on yourself, your hauora, and your whānau.

Looking after your health doesn’t always mean a doctor’s appointment.

It could be:

💬 Having a kōrero with your nurse or pharmacist

💉 Getting your blood pressure or medications checked

🩸 Doing your cervical, breast, or bowel screening

🤝 Visiting your local hauora or Māori health provider

🏃🏽‍♀️ Taking time to rest, move, and nourish your tinana and wairua

Small steps today can make a big difference tomorrow.

Taking care of yourself is one of the best ways to take care of your whānau. ❤️

Spring kai and wellbeing

He kai kei aku ringa - the power to nurture our own wellbeing starts with the choices we make each day.

As Papatūānuku awakens for spring, it’s the perfect time to reconnect with the rhythms of our kai and our environment.

As new life emerges, it’s a good time to:

🥗 Enjoy fresh seasonal kai - leafy greens, watercress and local produce.

💧 Drink plenty of wai Māori to refresh and restore.

🤝 Share kai and connection with whānau - nourishment for body and wairua.

National Diabetes Day | Mate Huka Awareness

Diabetes continues to have a significant impact on Māori health here in Te Moana a Toi.

Māori are still much more likely to be diagnosed with mate huka (diabetes) — and too many of our whānau aren’t getting the regular checks that help prevent complications.

Regular health checks make a real difference.

👉🏽 If you or someone you love lives with diabetes, ask your health provider about your next HbA1c test and kidney check.

These small steps can help prevent serious complications and keep our whānau well for the long term. ❤️

We’re proud to welcome Ngāti Pūkenga iwi Trustee, Gina Berghan to Te Moana a Toi IMPB.

Gina joins with fresh energy and perspective, and we look forward to the skills and commitment she will bring to the table, as we continue to serve our iwi, hapū, and whānau.

“Whānau is at the heart of everything we do — their wellbeing, their aspirations, and their right to equitable care,” Gina Berghan.

We also extend our deep gratitude to outgoing trustee, Kipouaka Pukekura-Marsden. Her contribution has been greatly valued by Te Moana a Toi.

Nau mai, haere mai — we’re looking forward to the journey ahead.

November is Diabetes Action Month.

Young people can get diabetes. Any age. Any stage. Know the signs.

⚠️ Always thirsty?

⚠️ Always tired?

⚠️ Peeing a lot?

⚠️ Losing weight without trying?

These could be signs of mate huka (diabetes) — even if you’re young and active.

If you or anyone you know is showing signs or symptoms of mate huka, please seek medical advice as soon as possible. Once someone has symptoms, they may become very sick, very quickly.

Early diagnosis and care can make all the difference.

Kia mataara e te whānau – Measles is spreading again.

With lots of whānau having travelled across the rohe over the long weekend, it’s a good time to stay cautious and help prevent measles from spreading.

If you or anyone in your whānau start showing symptoms - like a fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, or a rash - please stay home and phone ahead before going to your GP or health provider. This helps keep others safe.

📞 You can also call Healthline on 0800 611 116 anytime for free advice or answers to your pātai.

Protect yourself and your loved ones:

💉 Two doses of the MMR vaccine (after 12 months of age) protects nearly everyone (99%) from measles.

✅ The MMR vaccine is free and safe for anyone under 18, and for adults who qualify for free healthcare.

🏥 You can get vaccinated at your pharmacy, GP, nurse, Hauora Māori, or Pacific health provider. Find your nearest clinic here: https://info.health.nz/immunisations/immunisation-clinics

🌐 You can check for updates on confirmed exposure sites here: https://info.health.nz/conditions-treatments/infectious-diseases/about-measles/measles-locations-of-interest-in-aotearoa-new-zealand -locations-of-interest-17809

✨ Te pātai o te rā ✨

“What’s one thing you wish mainstream health services understood about Māori wellbeing?”

We know hauora is more than just physical health – it’s about whānau, wairua, hinengaro and tinana, all working together. 💫

Drop your whakaaro in the comments ⬇️ – your voice helps shape a health system that truly reflects us all.

We can nourish our wairua by connecting with something bigger than ourselves - nature, karakia, or silence.

We might recite karakia, watch the sunrise, sit quietly with our thoughts, or remember our tūpuna.

Even one quiet moment can help us nourish our wairua. ✨
