Financial strain means reduced activities for RSA this year
At a recent meeting of the RSA Trust, it was decided to reduce RSA activities this year. Mac McCallion, Local Support Advisor for the RSA, says, “There is considerable financial strain in the community right now, household budgets are stressed, recent public events have been very close together and overall it is difficult to get volunteers.”
So the RSA will not run a street appeal this year. “We will still sell poppies but mainly in supermarkets, outside banks and clubs. We will not be approaching retail outlets.” Of course, you can still donate to the cause by transferring funds into the Poppy Fund which is 020792 0066015 01.
There will be no changes to the Anzac Day service. Veterans will assemble at the Alexander Library by 6.15am to march to the War Memorial Centre forecourt. Mac says, “The RSA will lay service wreaths, and other groups are welcome to come with their own to lay.”
The Trust assists members and their families by providing financial relief on a needs basis. Any requests need to made to Mac by appointment. You can contact him on 021 115 8905.
The reality is that RSA membership is declining around the country, and Whanganui is no exception “We have about 110 to 120 members on the books, but we get only 20 at a general meeting.” The recent meeting explained what the RSA Welfare Trust has done and what ongoing welfare is available.”
The local branch is also looking to rationalise the storage of archival material through the Ministry of Veteran Affairs and other relevant agencies. Some memorabilia has been offered to the local museum. Those families who have donated items can come to look and help decide what is best to do with them.
