⚠️ Severe Coastal Weather Update ⚠️
Latest Update: 6:00pm - Sunday 18 January 2026

Thanks to the efforts of our Emergency services, council workers and the volunteer community response groups, nearly all previous affected areas of Whangaruru are now accessible by road, and affected campers and holidaymakers have either left the area or made themselves safe after heavy downpour in central-east coastal areas of Northland.

Civil Defence Northland are now preparing for more heavy rain forecast for later in this week. So please remember to be prepared and have resources at hand in case of another event occurring.

⛔ Caution is still advised for travel into the area as services are still working on clearing roads and removing debris.

Many thanks to the emergency services, workers and volunteers and the community for all their efforts today.

Watch for symptoms: fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, rash starting on the face and spreading.

If you’re unsure, we can help. Contact your GP or hauora provider.

Tiakina te hauora ō tātou tamariki.

Tamariki have returned from Mana Kuratahi, where kura from across the motu came together to celebrate kapa haka.

With measles cases in some regions, gatherings like this can increase the chance of measles spreading. Now’s a good time to check your immunisation status, especially for our tamariki and rangatahi.

If you’re not sure, it’s all good, we can help. Two free doses of the MMR vaccine offer strong protection.

What kura and whānau can do:
• Encourage MMR vaccination for anyone who isn’t fully vaccinated
• Ask tamariki and kaimahi to stay home if they feel unwell
• Seek medical advice from your GP or hauora provider if measles symptoms appear

Measles symptoms to look out for:
• High fever
• Runny nose
• Cough
• Red eyes
• Rash that begins on the face and spreads to the body

Symptoms usually appear 10–12 days after exposure. Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks.

Mā te mōhio ka ora. Through awareness we keep everyone safe.
