Why Most Manual Handling Training Doesn’t Work ...

You spend precious budget on Manual Handling Training - but sprain, strain & injuries keep happening - it's not because your team doesn’t care, it's because traditional training doesn’t build lasting movement habits.

Safe movement isn’t about memorising rules. Safe movement needs to be a reflex that sticks under pressure.

Provention's First Move Training method helps workers build automatic, safe movement habits and reduce injuries.

The Hierarchy of Control: Theory vs Practice - are we getting it wrong?

In Occupational Health & Safety, we know the Hierarchy of Controls :
Elimination - Substitution - Engineering Controls - Administrative Controls -
PPE

On paper, it’s clear:
- Elimination is the most effective - PPE is the least effective

But in reality?
Organisation's think they're addressing the real problem - but often they're only working at the surface level with PPE. They've flipped the pyramid and have the Hierarchy of Illusion!

- Bottom of the pyramid: Quick fixes that seem easy but don’t last
- Middle layers: Temporary solutions or workarounds that give the illusion of progress
- Top of the pyramid: Real, lasting change comes from tackling the root cause

Organisations often spend 80% effort on 10% of the controls that matter least.

Where are your efforts are going? Are you fixing symptoms … creating real solutions?

Quick fixes feel easy, satisfying. Temporary solutions look productive. But real change starts at the root or source.

Prevention at the source is always stronger than protection at the surface.

Enter First Move Manual Handling Training - but the challenge is that Manual Handling training is often seen as a cost, when in reality the right training is an investment in eliminating risk.

When organisations ensure their workers have good movement strategies and habits, they reduce the risk of injury at its source. That goes a long way toward eliminating risk rather than simply managing it!

Alison, from Provention & First Move, was in Whangarei today, training our new AIM Manual Handling facilitators, Amy & Megan, who will help cover the Northland region.

They’re learning how to move, think, and understand why First Move training is so effective - creating healthy movement habits and preventing injury - which they’ll now pass on to you and your teams.

Send us a message if you’d like to find out more about the First Move Prevent Sprains & Strains from Manual Handling workshop.

Happy Chinese New Year

Today, the 17th February 2026, marks the start of the Lunar New Year - and the Year of the Fire Horse. This combination of animal and element only comes around once every 60 years, the last time was in 1966.

Chinese New Year is all about reunion, renewal, and prosperity.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and share in the joy of a new beginning.

Valentine’s Day is about more than romance and commercialisation - it’s about connection.

Take a moment today to show a little aroha to the people around you - your whānau, friends, colleagues, or someone who might need it more than you realise.

A kind word or small gesture can go a long way. Small moments of aroha make a real difference - and a little kindness can strengthen any heart.

It's World Radio Day today - 13th February

Did you know :
- In NZ, 2026 marks 100 years since the creation of the Radio Broadcasting Company, the forerunner to Radio New Zealand
- NZ was the first country to regularly broadcast Parliament live in 1936 - making democracy accessible to all
- Radio Dunedin is the longest continuously broadcasting station in the Commonwealth.

Today most of us listen to music and breaking news, podcasts and chitchat from announcers wherever we are - radio continues to connect us around the world.

PS - It's also World Condom Day - but you can look that one up :)

Today we've commemorated the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (Tiriti o Waitangi) 186 years ago. It's a time to reflect on our shared history and the partnerships that continue to shape Aotearoa.

With the long weekend, it’s also a chance to spend time with whānau and friends, appreciate our communities, and enjoy our stunning country that we’re fortunate to call home.

Wherever you are, we hope you find time to rest and connect. Stay safe and take care.
