📢 Have your say on accessible housing in Tai Tokerau!

The Whangārei Accessible Housing Trust is applying for government funding to build more affordable, accessible homes in Northland.

To support their application, they need to hear from the community about:

🏠 Where accessible homes are most needed
📐 What size homes are required
♿ The level of disability and accessibility needs

If you’re disabled, support someone who is, or work in the disability sector, your voice really matters.

Your feedback will help strengthen the case for more accessible housing in our region.

With heavy rain warnings in place for parts of Te Tai Tokerau, there’s a risk of flooding occurring in some areas. To stay safe:

⚠️ Follow Civil Defence Northland on Facebook for updates or listen to your local radio station, and follow instructions from emergency services if required.

☔ Never try to walk, swim, drive through, or play in flood water. Always assume that floodwater is contaminated with farm run-off, animal and human sewage and chemicals.

❗If your or someone else’s life is in danger call 111 urgently. For non-urgent health advice you can also call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free anytime.

🚗 Some areas are being advised to avoid travel. If you do need to drive be careful on the roads. Follow NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi - Northland for the latest.

🧹 If you experience any flooding to your property make sure you clean up safely, wearing appropriate protective clothing and covering any cuts and wounds. Also wash your hands after contact with flood water or flood contaminated items, and before eating and after going to the toilet.

🦪 Hold off collecting kaimoana for 28 days after heavy rainfall — this is because there is an increased risk of contamination from stormwater and sewage.

🌊 Avoid swimming at recreational water spots for 48 hours after heavy rainfall, or until SafeSwim shows it is safe to go back in the water: https://safeswim.org.nz/

Since launching in 2015, the Kai Ora Fund has grown stronger every year. Now in its tenth year, we’re proud to have supported 47 new projects in 2025, distributing over $180,000 to selected recipients in Te Tai Tokerau.

From the Cape to Kaiwaka, these projects are sprinkled through the region - many in rural areas, where accessing nourishing, local, and affordable kai can be a real challenge.

Here’s to a decade of supporting our community-led food initiatives! 🌱
