‘I Am Noble’ Holistic Health Services is founded by Hadiyyeh Zohoori-Dossa. Hadiyyeh began practicing as a nutritionist after graduatin

g with a Master’s in Nutrition in 2003. She soon realised that many clients also shared their social, inter-personal and other stress-related problems and would benefit from professional mental health counselling. Hence, she pursued her Master’s in Counselling and since graduating in 2009, has been utilising a holistic approach.

Do you know about the four styles of communication? These are: Aggressive, Passive, Passive-Aggressive and Assertive. The preferred style is Assertive. Assertive Communication is a style in which individuals clearly state their opinions and feelings and firmly advocate for their rights and needs without violating the rights of others. They value themselves, their time, and their emotional, spiritual, and physical needs and are strong advocates for themselves while being very respectful of the rights of others. It takes courage (see previous post) to face our fears. If we gradually and persistently chip away at the reasons behind our anxieties, the process pays off in the end. It frees us from our handicaps and we are better able to cope with other challenges as they arise.
We also need to be careful to moderate courage with other virtues such as tact, wisdom and assertiveness in order to avoid the extremes of recklessness or aggressiveness. Look out for more on Assertiveness in future posts.

I would like to touch on courage this week. Firstly, take a look at the Virtues Card for Courage. Which aspects resonate with you? How have you shown courage recently? Have you seen it in anyone else, say, a child. Children tend to more courageously reach beyond their comfort zones than adults who have become stuck in their ways. Notice this card brings up many other related virtues: determination, confidence, acceptance, humility, openness.

It's very common for people to label thoughts as . For example, when asked "how were you feeling?" someone might respond "I felt like I'm fighting a never-ending battle". That is actually a thought, whereas a response expressing an emotion could have been "I was feeling sad and angry". Once we've got our emotions vocabulary more refined and are able, through , to identify our emotions in a particular situation, it becomes easier to also link them with our thoughts about the situation and the behaviours we carry out. Many of us are at a loss to find words to express our . Saying I feel bad or I feel good doesn't really describe how exactly you're feeling does it? We can increase our vocabulary by learning the words for specific emotions. Another important aspect of emotions is that they have a certain level of intensity and depending on how strong your emotion is, you can use a different word. For example, on the anger continuum, you may be feeling only slightly irritated or at the other extreme enraged. Stay tuned for more on emotions.
