Adult Learners' Week - He Tangata Mātauranga - September 7–13, 2026

Adult Learners' Week He Tangata Mātauranga is a UNESCO initiative celebrated in more than forty countries. We are part of an international movement dedicated to self-determination through learning.

ACE Aotearoa has celebrated this festival across the motu for more than twenty-five years. It’s a chance to showcase the learning on offer in our communities, acknowledge the achievements of learners who have returned to learning, and have fun.

Adult learning can take place in many different spaces and at many different levels of the community. Every week, thousands of adults are learning together in places like libraries, community centres, church halls, schools and marae. Through our annual festival, we want people to know that learning is joyful, directly linked to wellbeing, and even more powerful when we learn with others – building relationships and strengthening community as we go.

The aims of Adult Learners' Week are to:
* Celebrate learner success
* Raise the profile of community education and its benefits
* Encourage learning and make it accessible to all

JAPAN BLUE - NATURAL INDIGO DYEING

Discover the timeless art of Aizome, Japan’s celebrated indigo dyeing tradition. With roots stretching deep into Japanese history, this craft has captivated admirers worldwide for centuries. In this workshop, you’ll explore the dried leaf dyeing method, a unique approach that requires no mordant and showcases the innovative techniques artisans have developed over generations. This eco-friendly process uses plant-based dyes, reducing environmental impact and ensuring materials are fully biodegradable, returning to nature when dis-carded. Its sustainability makes Aizome especially relevant in today’s environmentally conscious world. Expect a range of beautiful shades, primarily soft blues. All materials are provided, including a small silk scarf for you to dye and take home. Tutor: Aiko Fukumoto has cultivated Japanese indigo in New Zealand and mastered both fresh and dried leaf dyeing techniques, bringing authentic expertise to this experience. This class pursues the Dried Leaf Method.

PAINTING SURF
We live in a beautiful country surrounded by water everywhere. Discover how to create an attractive illusion of dramatic ocean surf on canvas. This workshop offers you an opportunity to explore powerful movement of a raising wave lighten by the sun. You will learn how to paint white foam of the surf in the light and in the shadow. You will create an energetic picture full of power and light with acrylics on a medium size canvas. Even if you have little or no experience our tutor will show you, step by step, how to paint this beautiful nautical scene.
All materials are provided. Painting can be fun, and the results are stunning.
