🐝📚 World Book Day at Bumblebees 📚 🐝

What a fun day we had yesterday! Our tamariki enjoyed celebrating some of our favourite story books by dressing up. Our Kaiako provided so many meaningful opportunities to explore books, from The Hungry Catepillar, Dear Zoo to The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

At Bumblebees we nurture a love for early literacy because it lays the foundation for children’s future learning, communication, and overall development. Early literacy is not just reading and writing, but how tamariki make meaning through language, play and interaction.

Thank you to our Bumblebees community for donating preloved books for our Bumblebees Book Nook, a place where we swapped books with one another to take home.

On this day, our tamariki continued their journey of exploring self-identity through meaningful and creative expression in our atelier.

We delved into the cultural significance of henna designs, learning about the beautiful symbols and the stories they can represent. The children began by tracing their hands, using them as a canvas to design their very own henna-inspired patterns.

Each design was thoughtfully created, with tamariki carefully choosing symbols, shapes, and patterns that felt meaningful to them. It was wonderful to see the level of focus, creativity, and pride they brought to their work.

“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.” – Oscar Wilde

To deepen their understanding, the children shared their designs with one another, explaining the meanings behind their symbols and why they were important to them. This sparked rich conversations about identity, culture, and personal expression.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Easter through a range of Easter-inspired learning experiences, stories, and meaningful discussions. A favourite was defintely the hot cross bun inspired play dough experience! The children loved the colour and cinnamon smell 🐣

Our tamariki explored the traditions and values behind Easter while sharing their own ideas and experiences. These moments opened up rich conversations about different cultures, beliefs, and ways people celebrate around the world.

At our Bumblebees Whitford, we embrace and celebrate all holidays, creating opportunities for children to learn about and respect cultural differences in a warm and inclusive environment 💛

At Bumblebees Whitford, creativity and self-expression take many beautiful forms.

Recently, our tamariki have been exploring loose parts (natural and open-ended materials such as stones, match sticks, and small wood rounds) to create their own unique family portraits. Each creation tells a story, reflecting not just who is in their family, but how they see and understand those important relationships.
This experience connects deeply with our current project on self-identity.

Through working with loose parts, children are given the freedom to represent themselves and their families in ways that feel meaningful to them. There is no “right” or “wrong” way, just endless possibilities.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we recognise that children express their ideas in many different ways. Loose parts are one of the “hundred languages of children,” offering an open-ended, hands-on approach that encourages imagination, problem-solving, and personal storytelling.

It’s always incredible to see the diversity of ideas that emerge when children are empowered to create freely. 💛

This morning, our preschool children took their creativity outdoors, enjoying the warm sunshine as they created self-portraits from memory 🌞🎨

Standing side by side, they collaborated, shared space, and engaged in rich conversations about the features that make them uniquely themselves. From the shape of their eyes to their hair, smiles, and the little details they chose to include, each drawing reflected how they see and understand who they are.

Through this experience, the children explored identity in a meaningful way, recalling and representing their own image from within. This process supports the development of self-awareness, self-love, and a growing appreciation for their individuality. It also opens space for recognising and respecting the differences in others, fostering an early understanding of diversity and inclusion.

In line with the Reggio Emilia approach and the concept of the “100 languages of children,” drawing becomes one of the many ways children express their ideas, thoughts, and sense of self.

Today, their artwork was not just about creating images, but about communicating identity, building confidence, and celebrating both themselves and each other 💛

🌙✨ Exploring Eid Through Meaningful Experiences ✨🌙

Over the last few days our tamariki explored the celebration of Eid through thoughtful learning experiences across the room.

A purple sand design with stars and a crescent moon sparked conversations about the moon sighting that marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid.

The food table invited children to think about the special feast shared with family and friends, celebrating the end of fasting and the joy of coming together.

Children also explored henna patterns, learning how this festive tradition is often used in preparation for Eid.

Hanging lanterns added to the atmosphere, helping children notice how homes and spaces are decorated during celebrations.

Learning about culturally and religiously significant events helps children build understanding, respect, and appreciation for the diverse cultures within our community. As an inclusive centre, we value opportunities to celebrate and embrace the traditions, beliefs, and experiences that make our community so special. 🌙

To all the families who celebrate Eid, we wish you a joyful and blessed Eid Mubarak! 🌟

🍀💚 St Patrick’s Day Fun at the Centre 💚🍀

Today our tamariki celebrated St Patrick’s Day by dressing in green and taking part in a range of fun “green” learning experiences around the rooms.

Children explored green water potions made with coloured water and petals, experimented with green playdough, investigated green gloop as well coloured salt, and constructed with green magnets. These hands-on experiences encouraged curiosity, creativity, and exploration as tamariki mixed, created, and experimented.

It was a fun and engaging way to celebrate the day while supporting learning through play. 🍀💚

Today our tamariki slowed down to notice one of nature’s quiet transformations; the falling autumn leaves. 🍂

Gathered beneath the trees, little hands collected leaves of every shade: golden yellows, deep reds, soft browns. Each leaf became a small story of the changing season. The children observed the delicate veins, compared colours, and felt the crisp textures between their fingers.

Through such simple explorations, our children begin to develop the understanding that nature is always moving, always changing. Autumn teaches us that change is not an ending, but part of a beautiful cycle.

The rustling sound of dry leaves, their earthy scent, and the fragile feel of their surfaces invited rich sensory learning. As the children touched, listened, and looked closely, they were not only discovering leaves, they were discovering their place within the rhythms of the natural world.

In these quiet moments with nature, curiosity grows, wonder deepens, and learning unfolds gently.

Our environment plays an active role in children’s learning. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, our teachers intentionally design spaces based on children’s interests, conversations, and play.

When children show curiosity about insects, construction, or storytelling, we respond by adding materials and experiences that extend their thinking.

We prefer resources to be open-ended; inviting creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.

By planning environments with purpose and responding to children’s emerging interests, we create meaningful, engaging learning experiences that build confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Every day is an adventure, action packed with learning and laughter 😃

Welcoming the Lunar New Year with creativity, curiosity, and respect 🧧✨

Our Centre has come alive with vibrant red and gold as the children started celebrating Chinese New Year through meaningful, hands-on experiences. The children are creating their own lanterns, exploring traditional symbols, and engaging in stories and books that share the rich culture and traditions behind this special celebration.

Through art, conversation, and sensory learning, the children are discovering the importance of family, good fortune, gratitude, and new beginnings. These experiences help foster cultural awareness, inclusion, and respect for the diverse communities around us.

We are grateful to learn and celebrate together and we look forward to more celebration and learning throughout this Chinese New Year period.

Wishing all families who celebrate a joyful and prosperous New Year! ✨

Since the very first days of summer, our centre has been alive with the unmistakable song of cicadas echoing through the shrubs and trees around us. The children were instantly captivated, wondering where the sound comes from and what creature can be that loud.

Curiosity was buzzing just as loudly as the cicadas themselves!

Our incredible Bluebells teachers embraced this moment of wonder. They collected real cicada shells and created a hands-on learning provocation to bring the mystery to life. The discovery of the delicate shells sparked awe, excitement, and endless questions.
Through rich discussions, close observation, and exploration, the children investigated the cicadas shells and how such a small creature can make such a powerful sound.

What began as a simple summer soundtrack transformed into a meaningful learning journey. One driven by curiosity, discovery, and the joy of exploring the natural world together.
