10/12/2025
Dear patients, sorry it’s a long one!
Dr Steven Murugayah has taken some unexpected leave, meaning we had to reschedule a lot of patients who were booked up to Christmas. We genuinely apologise for the inconvenience.
Dr White got stuck on the Milford track for an extra day this week due to flooding. (Yes, he still insists that exercise is good for you! ) Thank you to all the patients we have had to reschedule over the last few weeks. We know shifting your appt is not ideal at all – but…. options are limited at the moment and we appreciate your flexibility.
We will have a new face on reception as we welcome Debbie Jennings from next week.
✨ Important Update About Appointments & Repeat Prescriptions ✨
To create more in-person GP appointments for patients who really need them, we’ve re-introduced Zoom and telephone consults where these are clinically appropriate. This helps us free up space for those who must be seen face-to-face. A lot of new doctors, but we hope to have some regulars from early next year.
🩺 A quick explanation about repeat prescriptions
Before working in General Practice, I assumed repeat scripts were as simple as my GP pressing a button when I called.
In reality, several hours of GP and nurse time every day go into safely reviewing “repeat” medications. Each request takes careful GP review (hospital letters, medication changes and shortages, safety checks — the whole works). It’s a lot!
Only after this careful review can your prescription be sent to your pharmacy.
💊 We are considering not offering same-day script requests.
To protect appointment time for patients who need to be seen, we’ve moved most prescription processing to the evenings, “outsourcing” it to locum doctors.
We’ve asked for two working days’ notice for almost 18 months, but we still receive daily last-minute requests that pull doctors away from patient appointments. Also please remember once the GP has sent the prescription to the Pharmacy, the pharmacy still need time to dispense the medication.
If you ring needing a same-day script, we will refer you to your Pharmacy to discuss an emergency 3 day supply. Please note there are strict regulations about the pharmacy being able to provide this service, it is not for all medications, and there is a cost involved. To help reduce this, anyone calling for a same-day script will be offered support from our Health Coach, who can help with medication planning and keeping on top of repeat requests.
🗓️ 12-Month Prescriptions (Coming February 2026!)
Some patients may be able to move to 12-month prescriptions — but they’re not suitable for everyone. You can chat with your GP about it at your next medication review after February 2026.
For everyone’s safety (and because the law says so), only your GP can approve this. Not reception or nurses. Please respect the team, they are doing all they can to help you.
No matter whether your review is every 3, 6, or 12 months, please book well in advance.
If you get your review done on time, you’ll usually avoid needing a repeat script altogether — a win for you and for us!
🎄 Christmas & New Year Hours
We will only be closed on the official Public Holidays and will remain open on the days in between.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to keep appointments available for those who need them most. We truly appreciate your support. 💙
From everyone at Winton Medical Centre – we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
