“If hitting my kids did any good in discipling my children, I would hit them too! But it doesn’t.” Remarked my psychology professor at my first day of university.

I often get asked a number of questions by parents-to-be or parents about how to discipline their children.

Often parents try to discipline their children by yelling at them, issuing commands or even yelling at them. However, yelling/shouting at your children unfortunately does very little to stop defiant behaviour, and at times can even fuel defiance.

Parents who use forms of punishment don’t teach their children to make positive changes in their behaviour and will likely fail when using this approach to encourage positive changes in their children.

I will share six strategies for discipling your child:
1) Set a good example
2) Be consistent
3) Try to understand what fuels your child’s defiant behaviour
4) Take emotion out of the equation
5) Use consequences that make sense
6) Make sure your consequences come on the heels of your child’s misbehaviour.
