The Royal Hospital is a tertiary care facility.

Its mandate is to ‘work-up’, diagnose, and treat complex cases which cannot be managed elsewhere in Oman. Accordingly, it focuses on technology that is not available at regional referral hospitals, and at primary health centers and polyclinics in the capital area. Patients with chronic conditions are stabilized and back-referred to their primary catchment areas for follow-up. Such back-referrals e

nsure that patients receive their care and medication closest to their place of residence. Emphasis on back-referrals also ensures that consultation slots and facilities are not clogged to receive new referrals. EQUAL ACCESS

The Royal Hospital is a Government facility, which operates on a ‘first-need-first-served’ basis, subject to clinical emergencies being given priority. Hence bed or room reservation in advance is not permitted. EXPATRIATES

In accordance with the MoH policy, expatriates are accepted for treatment at Royal Hospital if the case is an emergency, or if the clinical condition is such that there are no facilities for diagnosis or treatment in the private sector. EMERGENCY

There are separate Emergency Departments for adults and for children. This is an emergency ‘walk-in’ facility, for which no referral or appointment is required. On reporting, each patient is assessed for the genuineness and priority of the emergency, and cared for accordingly. If emergency care is not warranted, the patient is directed to the appropriate primary-care facility. ACCIDENT VICTIMS

The trauma related specialties (Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery and Burns, and General Surgery) are based at Khoula Hospital – the designated National Trauma Center. Accident victims should hence be taken directly to the Khoula Hospital A&E so that no time is lost in initiating life- and limb-saving treatment. DELIVERY SUITE EMERGENCY ROOM

This is meant for women who report in labor and for those who have pregnancy-related complications after 28 weeks of gestation. Further, the Royal Hospital Delivery Suite is meant only for those booked for delivery at Royal Hospital. Gynecological emergencies should report to the Adult Emergency and not to the Delivery Suite. OUTPATIENTS

Outpatients are seen only by appointment, based on a referral request from a secondary health care facility. Outpatients should present themselves at the registration counter at least 15 minutes prior to their appointment time. INPATIENTS

Patients are admitted through the outpatient department, emergency departments, or as direct admission/transfer from another health care facility. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

At the time of admissions, a patient is required to provide the following:

Admission appointment form generated on the advice of the admitting doctor. Demographic particulars: full name, home address, contact telephone numbers, Sheikh or sponsor’s name and address. Medical disclosure form: name of one relative who is authorized to receive information regarding the patient’s clinical condition and progress. Written consent for care. Omanis and AGCC nationals: national identification card. Expatriates: copy of passport and residence card, birth certificate for expatriate children. Expatriates working in Government sector and their authorized dependents: medical benefit entitlement card. All paying patients: RO 300 for payment of deposit, or letter of undertaking from the sponsor. THINGS TO BRING FOR ADMISSION

Footwear: slippers or sandals
Toiletries: soap, toothpaste, shaving set. THINGS NOT TO BRING FOR ADMISSION

Personal and bed linen
Radio, television or other electrical items

Patients and visitors are advised not to bring excessive cash or valuables into the hospital. If these are available on admission, the patient is advised to send them home with their family member. The Hospital does not accept responsibility for loss or theft of money, jewelry, mobile phones and other items. PRIVATE ROOMS

All patients desiring single rooms are required to pay for the same even if they are otherwise entitled for free care. However, a patient in a private room is required to vacate the room if the same is required to isolate another patient on medical grounds. FINANCE

Care is free for Omanis, citizens of other AGCC countries, and for expatriates (and their approved family members) working in the Government sector. All others are expected to pay, in advance, the nominal charges levied for the various services. All hospitalization bills must be settled prior to discharge. PATIENT ATTENDANTS

Children admitted to the hospital should have an attendant, preferably a female. Ladies in the delivery suite may have their spouse or a female attendant. Patients in private rooms are also allowed an attendant. For all other inpatients, the ward nurse will decide on the necessity of an attendant on the basis of the patient’s clinical condition as specified in the attendant rules. Where permitted, only one attendant is allowed per patient. However, being a ‘baby-friendly hospital’, if the attendant is breast-feeding, one breast-fed sibling is permitted. Attendants in female wards should be female. Attendants are issued an entry pass to enter and remain in the hospital outside visiting hours. Authorized attendants are served free meals. Authorized attendants in the Pediatric Intensive Care and High Dependency Units are provided with free sleeping accommodation. To promote breast-feeding, mothers of newborns admitted to the Special Care Baby Unit are provided with sleeping accommodation if they normally reside outside the capital area. If they reside in the capital area, these parents are provided with attendant passes to visit SCBU on a 24 hour basis. VISITORS

All visitors should enter and leave the hospital only through the main entrance. For their own protection, children below 12 years are not allowed to visit patients. Visitors are restricted in the Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Units and Special Care Baby Unit. VISITING HOURS

Weekdays: 3 pm to 6 pm. Weekends and Public Holidays: 10 am to 12 pm, and 3 pm to 6 pm. During Ramadhan: 7 pm to 10 pm daily. Also 10 am to 12 pm on weekends. Patient relatives who are called for a discussion, and those desiring to visit inpatients outside the designated visiting hours, should justify their purpose and seek an entry pass from the Patient Relations’ Officer at the entrance lobby. FOOD

Meals, snacks and beverages are provided to all patients in accordance with the doctor’s instruction and the dietician’s advice. No additional charge is levied for these. For medical and hygienic reasons, the hospital does not allow food from outside to be brought in for patients or attendants. Leftover food must not be kept inside the patient’s locker as this is a health hazard. VISITORS’ CAFETERIA

This is located near the Pediatric Wards on the ground floor. Visitors can purchase meals and snacks in this cafeteria, which is open from 7.30 am to 6 pm. SMOKING

Smoking is prohibited throughout the hospital. BAKHOUR

Incense burning is also prohibited due to health and fire hazards. FIRE

Patients and visitors are requested to familiarize themselves with the hospital layout and fire instructions displayed at various locations. MOBILE PHONES

Cell Phones (even when not in use or in silent mode) interfere with the functioning of critical care equipment, and may cause harm to patients or death. Hence patients, attendants and visitors are requested to shut off their mobile phone before entering the hospital building. TELEPHONES

Public telephones, operated through a phone card, are conveniently situated in the corridor outside the wards, and throughout the Hospital. HOSPITAL SHOP

This is located at the main entrance of the hospital. Toiletries, phone cards, flowers and gift items are available at this small outlet, which is open from 7.30 am to 1 pm, and from 2 pm to 6 pm. ATM MACHINE

A cash teller machine is located opposite the outpatient registration counter in the main entrance foyer. COMPLAINTS

Patients and visitors who are dissatisfied with care or with the hospital’s facilities or service are encouraged to meet the Patient Relations’ Officer or Duty Director. If the verbal complaint is not resolved, a written complaint may be submitted for the attention of the Director General. PATIENT RELATIONS’ OFFICER (PRO)

The PROs, who are based at the main reception counter at the entrance, serve as a liaison between the patient and the hospital. They also assist the public in locating patients during visiting hours. They work closely with the Security Staff in ensuring safety and security of all areas within the hospital and its grounds. DISCHARGE PROCEDURES

When the doctor advises discharge, the following will occur:

A medication prescription is usually given. Omani patients and expatriates who are eligible for free care are dispensed drugs to be taken after discharge. Paying expatriate patients will be required to obtain their medication from a private pharmacy. A discharge summary is issued, which documents the patient’s diagnosis, results of salient investigations, treatment provided, response to treatment, post-discharge instructions, and back-referral note if required.
