During dental X-rays, patients sometimes notice that the doctor or assistant steps out of the room.
This is not because the X-ray is unsafe.
Dental X-rays involve a very low level of radiation and are considered safe when taken as needed.
However, for dental staff who are exposed repeatedly throughout the day, minimizing cumulative exposure is important.
For this reason, the team will either step out or stand behind protective shielding.
Accompanying persons are also usually asked to step out to avoid unnecessary exposure.
These protocols are part of standard radiation safety guidelines followed worldwide.
