I want to share this, since it has been something that keeps coming back with every client I've been seeing as a nutrionist.
People obviously contact me regarding their weight... I've heard: "I gained so much weight lately, I look like a pig, you've got to help me out". Or "I am losing so much weight, I'm having panic attacks, I'm scared all the time, I eat normal but I want to look like I did before all the stress and anxiety, help me gain weight."
People think a "diet" or "nutrition" will make their bodies be balanced and healthy. And the truth is >>> it's the OTHER WAY AROUND. You have to give your body all that it requires to be balanced and healthy and ONLY THEN your body in turn will give you a healthy (or your ideal) weight.
And the other truth, is that a healthy diet, or healthy choices in general, can only be an OUTCOME, A RESULT, from having a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP with yourself.
If you call yourself a pig, no salad in the whole wide world is gonna make you have a healthy self image. What this person needs, is to evaluate and transform her inner dialogue. Once her self talk is loving and caring, she'll eventually stop reaching out for destructive habits (this can be binge eating/ drinking). And after a while, she'll find nurturing and healthy options more & more attractive.
So, it's a CIRCULAR movement. But instead of going into the mode of shame and guilt, destruction and/or suppression, it's now a circular motion -powered by selflove- towards patience, understanding, presence and care.
You can literally eat all the best foods, organic and all the rest of it, but if you talk to yourself in contemptuous ways or repeat awful memories in your head over and over again or beat yourself up whenever something goes wrong,...then food will not bring balance nor health to your body. Even if it's highly nutritious.
If you ON TOP OF THAT, smoke & drink & eat loads of sugar AND you go to bed each night at 1 AM.... you can pretty much be certain the "food" factor will not have any effect at all.
A sidenote must be made here >>> having a "normal" weight also does NOT necessarily imply you're in good health. You can have a "healthy weight" and have insuline resistance, fatty liver and clogged arteries, all at the same time. That's why BMI is a very moronic way of "calculating" a healthy body weight.
"So I can't have any treats?" You ask.
That's the thing. If you have an overall healthy lifestyle, treats are no problem. If you have a healthy liver, it is definitely capable of removing your daily toxins and metabolising fats adequately. If your body works the way it is designed to work, you can definitely have a coffee now and then or a glass of wine occasionally.
So, we're left with the most important question >>> WHAT DOES A "HEALTHY LIFESTYLE" LOOK LIKE? WHAT IS IT COMPROMISED OF?
That greatly depends on every individual because we all have very unique & specific needs (that is why Ayurveda is so much more holistic and complete then the western perspective on nutrition, because it takes our intrinsic constitution or blueprint into account).
But in general, we could say that a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE consists of HAVING DAILY HABITS THAT BRING US INTO COHERENCE, BALANCE OR "HOMEOSTASIS".
This means that you continuously thrive and whenever you "fall out" of this alignment, you have the correct habits to put yourself back on track.
Generally we can say the following habits cultivate a state of balance/coherence/homeostasis in EVERYBODY:
• you can observe your mind and consciously cultivate a positive self imagine (this includes talking to yourself in uplifting, motivational ways)
• you have daily physical exercise (cardio & muscle mass)
• you get enough sunlight
• you go to bed early
• you drink enough water
• you maintain healthy relationships (and let go of toxic ones)
• you create a healthy microbiome (good gut health)
• you optimize your mental hygiene & work on trauma release (for example through lymphatic support, fascia stretches/release, EMDR, NLP, hypnosis, creative writing, humming, stroking the face/upper arms, yin yoga, pranayama breathing...)
So be smart and don't focus on food. Don't focus on the scale. Focus on your energy, focus on the invisible first. And the outcome will be a reflection of that.
Don't let your mind dictate what you should look like.
Give your being all it needs to thrive and be surprised of the beautiful being that arises from that.
Don't think "how can I gain weight"? Think "how can I release my stress? How can I transform my anxiety?"
