The giant waxy monkey tree frog (lat.Phyllomedusa Bicolor) is having many names among the different tribes in the Amazonian jungle, the most common one is Kambo. He produces a secretion (also called Kambo) that some amazonian tribes in the jungle are using to get rid from 'panema' – bad luck or negative energies. The Matses, an amazonian tribe, believe that when someone is sick, depressed, infertile, not able to find a partner or not able to hunt a big animal, that they are possessed by a bad energy so they take Kambo to get rid off it. A legend from the amazonian tribe Kaxinawa, say that the Indios of a village were very ill and the Shaman Kampu had tried everything possible to cure them. All medicinal herbs known were used, but none helped his people's agony. Kampu then entered the forest and under the effect of Ayahuasca, received the visit of the great God who brought in his hands a frog from which he took a white secretion. He taught Kampu how to apply the secretion. When the Shaman Kampu returned to his village and followed the instructions he received and so he was able to cure his tribe. After Shaman Kampu's death, his spirit went to live in the frog and the Indios began to use it's secretion to remain active and healthy. The first westerners had their experiences with the Kambo in the 1980's and the scientific research which was made, proved that Kambo contained different peptides that can be used to treat many diseases. I started to work with the Kambo in 2011 while living in the Peruvian jungle and I saw how Kambo helped many people on various levels, physical, emotional but also spiritual. I repute Kambo one of the greatest natural medicines as it also saved my life when I was ill from malaria for many months and no other medicines could give me a definitive healing. As the interest for the Kambo is growing and many people wish to learn to work with this medicine we also started since January 2016 to offer our KAMBO NATURISTA TRAINING in the peruvian amazon rainforest for all which wish to learn all the necessary about how to use safely this medicine in the natural environment of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog. The last 4 years were very demanding for me because I made an important but compromising decision that didn’t allow me to spend as much time in Peru as I wanted. At the same time, I bought a property in the Peruvian jungle 3 years ago and built a retreat center on the land. Because of the limited time I could spend at the center, our offerings were also limited, but all this changes now.

The center is now open for most of the year. In addition to our regular programs, we now also offer personalized and individual retreats, as well as volunteering and visits.

How to Avoid Misinformation About Kambo:
Know the Basics and Ask the Right Questions

While in Kambo groups, advice is often opinion-based, leading to contradictory answers and confusion, there is also a way to minimize it. Always check sources to not be misled.

Categorize claims into Tradition, Science, or Belief, then ask:

Tradition: “Which tribe? Universal or unique?”
Science: “What study? Human/animal? Sample size?”
Belief: “Personal insight or observed multiple times?”
Sharing opinions is fine, but they aren’t facts, stating them as such spreads myths. Personal experiences are subjective; don’t rush conclusions after just a few sessions, they could be coincidences. Evaluate observations honestly: Distinguish between something that is an idea and something that can be replicated consistently.

Kambo secretion used by the frog as sunscreen?

I first heard about this theory a couple of years ago, but I didn’t give much attention to it as I could tell this couldn’t be completely true based on my personal experience with the frog.

Two weeks ago, I posted a reel from our last training where the participants received fresh medicine directly from the frog. A practitioner that I don’t know seemed to be angered by it, criticizing that we are having the frog in the sun and much more suggestion that we are harming the frog. I dismissed all the claims as they were factually not correct, but the person went to make a video and talk about Kambo in the Sun.

This post is inspired by that experience

First of all, there is a huge difference between having frogs in the blasting sun versus daylight; one shouldn’t mistake those two.

Another claim that was made was that there is a study by David Attenborough that Kambo’s secretion is used by the frog to protect them from the sun, calling it a “sunscreen” and that it isn’t to protect them from predators. Apart from the short comment in the BBC documentary on the topic, I couldn’t find any study by David Attenborough, and equally there are no studies by other scientists suggesting that Kambo’s secretion is used as sun protection or that it protects against UV radiation. What one can find very well are different independent studies that have been done on the secretion and peptides, and all are suggesting that the secretion is used by the frog as a protective mechanism against predators and microbes.

Experience is the best teacher that’s why I invite any sceptic to see for themselves. If you have any other factual information on this topic that may contradict what I have said, please share so we can learn from it.
