As the sun sets in the Amazon, field learning continues.

During this session, a local expert demonstrates one of the classic methods used in vector research: Human Landing Catch, a technique that helps scientists understand mosquito behavior and disease transmission.

When an Anopheles mosquito lands and is carefully captured, students gather around to observe the moment closely — turning a brief encounter into a powerful learning experience.

In the field, knowledge is shared, curiosity grows, and science comes alive.

Science is not built only in classrooms or through books.

For many researchers, understanding a problem begins by stepping outside the four walls and going where those challenges actually exist — in forests, rivers, and communities.

Field experiences allow students to observe, ask questions, and connect with people whose daily lives are shaped by the environments we study.

Visiting a community, listening to local perspectives, and witnessing realities firsthand can transform how we think about research.

Because many of the most meaningful research questions emerge in the field — and that is where real solutions begin.

Desde UPCH-YALE Laboratorios Teodoro E. Gildred, nos sumamos a esta fecha compartiendo la trayectoria de la PhD. Dionicia Gamboa, investigadora y ganadora del premio L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science - 2016.

Quiero compartir estas fotos de mi trayectoria porque honran algo más que mi investigación: reflejan el camino recorrido. Desde la niña que siempre se preguntaba el porqué de las cosas, hasta la investigadora que soy hoy.

Haber recibido el premio L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” en el 2016 marcó un antes y un después en mi carrera. Gracias a esta comunidad liderada por la Fondation L’Oréal y la , en la que más de 4,900 mujeres de 140 países nos apoyamos mutuamente, hoy mi trabajo en vigilancia molecular de la malaria en comunidades remotas de la Amazonía peruana, es mi forma de contribuir generando evidencia para identificar la aparición de resistencia a los tratamientos antimaláricos y mapear la diversidad genética del parásito, con el fin de implementar respuestas más eficientes ante brotes y amenazas emergentes del parásito.
Abrir camino para las que vienen es la mejor forma de honrar este reconocimiento. Así que, si eres investigadora, te traigo una gran noticia: ya abrió la convocatoria 2026 para Colombia, Ecuador y Perú.

Este año 3 investigadoras recibirán un subsidio de US $10.000 como reconocimiento a su trayectoria. Si haces ciencia en la región, esta oportunidad es para ti.
