Conceived and started by Dr. Carlos Yaipen-LLanos in 2003, it operates as the headquarters of ORCA PERU. THE SOUTH PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER started with the rehabilitation of "Oscar", the first South American sea-lion ever rescued, rehabilitated and released in Peru, on May 24th, 2003. The South Pacific Marine Mammal Center was started by Dr Carlos Yaipén-Llanos at the age of 26, Founder President of the Organization for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Animals -ORCA- in Peru. He is, and always has been, a marine mammal enthusiast and is the first qualified marine vet in the country. He was specially trained at Sarasota's Mote Marine Laboratory Whale and Dolphin Hospital and at the Marine Mammal Center based in Sausalito, California. He has worked with over 20 different species including whales, dolphins, porpoises, sea turtles, penguins, sea lions, marine otters and seals. Main achievements:
1) On June 5th 2003, the first ever rescued and rehabilitated South American sea lion named "Oscar" was released into the ocean.
2) In the summer of 2008, ORCA runs at this Center the world's first rehabilitation and education program for baby sea lions that uses acoustics and aims to release them into the wild.
3) June 8th, 2011: "Arwen", a bottlenose dolphin, was rescued, rehabilitated and released, the first ever in Peru, and the only one survivor of all strandings worldwide that year. She has been sighted 3 times since then.
4) October 14th, 2012: First triple release: "Flynn", "Fiona" and "Felix" are released together, the first multi-release of South American sea-lions ever in Peru. It made news worldwide as an advanced marine conservation achievement in the country.
5) September 28th, 2013: Largest multi-release of sea-lions in Peru! "Vanessa", "Yaligei", "Arya", Rocky", "Teva" and "Sebastian" make it back into the ocean after a long rehabilitation from human injuries, from poisoning and broken ribs to kidney failure to orphanship after mother killed. All sea-lions are succesfully back in their habitat.
