¿Por qué es importante? ¿Cuál es el alcance?

El cribado neonatal actual garantiza en España la detección de entre 12 y 44 enfermedades congénitas con tratamiento eficaz. Con las nuevas aportaciones del Ministerio pronto serán entre 22 y 44 enfermedades. No obstante, se debe tener en cuenta: que existen aproximadamente 5.600 enfermedades raras de origen genético; los avances en nuevos tratamientos, y el crecimiento en el conocimiento molecular de las enfermedades congénitas y las herramientas de detección genómica. Por estos motivos es más que razonable pensar que los programas de cribado pueden englobar un número superior de patologías que actualmente no cuentan con marcadores de detección bioquímica, pero sí con opciones terapéuticas.
