This is Dr. Carlos Ramos, a dedicated ophthalmologist from Peru with a laser focus on restoring sight for people with cataracts. 👀🔎✨
Last year, he joined an Orbis-led training project designed to enhance cataract surgical skills and knowledge at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (IRO), in Trujillo.
“With this training I think we will have better resolution of cataracts that are a little more complex and have a higher degree of difficulty. Patients who have a considerable decrease in their vision due to the cataract and who after surgery can recover their vision. That is the idea and goal of surgery,” Dr. Ramos said.
Though highly treatable, many people around the world don’t have access to ophthalmologists with the required skills and knowledge. Which is why one of our key focus areas is training— when eye teams get the training they need, patients get the care they deserve.
Cataracts can lead to blurred vision and eventual blindness. Surgery to replace the old cloudy lenses with artificial ones is the only way to restore vision and training global eye teams to handle the most difficult cases ensures no one gets left behind. This is where our world-leading Orbis Volunteer Faculty expert, Dr. James Lehmann (pictured) stepped in.
Dr. Ramos reported back on a successful week of training with our seasoned volunteers which heavily focused on building advanced cataract surgery techniques.
He shared how the training will elevate patient care. “Since it is a training purely on cataract surgeries, there are different, let's say, complexities in terms of cataract surgeries. In this case, advanced cataract surgery has been performed, with a certain degree of complexity.
“So, that does help us a lot to be able to resolve complex cataract cases in a certain way. And try to help and improve the visual health of our patients. That is practically what it is for, so that they can recover their vision in a much more ideal way.”
What better way to hone the skills to save sight than by using the most complex case possible. Dr. Ramos said during the training, they dealt with a difficult case where a cataract was so dense and hard amongst other issues. Under the guidance of Dr. Lehmann, they removed the cataract and pending follow up, it is believed the patient will recover well and have more visual quality.
Following training, not only does the eye surgeon believe he has perfected his skills, he feels he will also have a little more decisiveness when making critical surgical decisions.
