Q:I have been reading with interest about the Adventist emphasis on health. Do people outside the Adventist Church recognize the benefits of our health approach?

A:The number of people in the United States who are obese (67.6 million) has overtaken the number who are merely overweight (65.2 million). Noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart attack, respiratory diseases, and cancer are on the rise. Trends must change!

In February 2009 U.S. News & World Report posted 10 habits that will help a person live to 100. Number 8 stated:

“Live like a Seventh Day Adventist. Americans who define themselves as Seventh Day Adventists have an average life expectancy of 89, about a decade longer than the average American. One of the basic tenets of the religion is that it’s important to cherish the body that’s on loan from God, which means no smoking, alcohol abuse, or overindulging in sweets. Followers typically stick to a vegetarian diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts, and get plenty of exercise. They’re also very focused on family and community.”1

As early as 1863 Ellen White counseled Seventh-day Adventists about healthful living. The outstanding feature of her initial message was the “relation between physical welfare and spiritual health, or holiness.”2 Long before medical evidence emerged on the dangers of smoking, Ellen White spoke out strongly on to***co, alcohol, and poisonous medications such as arsenicals and mercury-based drugs. The drinking of tea and coffee and the use of other stimulants was strongly discouraged, as was the use of flesh food. She promoted a balanced vegetarian diet. In addition, the use of fresh, clean water (inside and out), clean air, adequate exercise and rest, temperance, faith, appropriate sunshine exposure, integrity, and social support were strongly encouraged.

Time reported the positive outcome of the first Adventist Health Study,3 describing the results as the “Adventist Advantage.”4 There was significant reduction in most cancers and cirrhosis of the liver, and a significant increase in longevity (seven to nine years) in those living the Adventist lifestyle. The analyses were so compelling that the National Institutes of Health allocated $19 million to conduct Adventist Health Study 2 (AHS 2), with a special emphasis on the differences in malignancies between Adventists and the general population. There were 95,000 participants throughout the United States and Canada. The facts emerging confirm the benefits of a plant-based diet and a beneficial reduction of noncommunicable diseases.

The November 2005 issue of National Geographic focused on the “secrets of living longer” and included Adventists.5

More important than living a few years longer, however, is the injunction to “do the works of him who sent me [Jesus]” (John 9:4). God has given consistent guidance on how we can be healthy, happy, and holy. The health and wellness we gain is to be channeled into His service. We are to be conduits of His grace to a suffering world. It’s exciting to live in a time when science confirms and underscores the instructions given more than 100 years ago!

Do those outside of our church recognize the Adventist health advantage? Indeed they do. Let’s make the difference by living and sharing this news to make the difference for all!

US, PNG to sign ship-rider agreement

Minister for Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko has announced that the PNG and U.S governments will officially sign off the “Ship-rider” agreement in December.

The bilateral agreement follows high-level meeting between the two governments during the recent U.S-Pacific Islands forum in Washington DC.

Minister Tkatchenko says the two Governments will officially sign off the agreement in December during the opening of the new U.S Embassy building in Port Moresby, with PNG expected to receive a high-level delegation of US official.

Minister Tkatchenko says during the visit, the PNG and US governments will officially sign off the “Ship-rider” agreement.

“Ship-rider is about putting Papua New Guineans on US post guards or Defence Force ships in our region.

“PNG Defence Force will be working side by side the Americans on the vessels protecting our waters from illegal fishing, human smuggling, illegal logging and drug smuggling.

“This will cost millions of kina that the US government will cater for. This will also connect us to the satellite system where all boats in our waters around PNG will be observed and monitored.”

Minister Tkatchenko said the Defense Ministry would take the lead in the formulation of the MoA with assistance with the state Solicitor and the Justice Ministry.

“We will be working closely with the Defence Minister to get it over the line so all our seas, sovereign waters are protected for the first time with the assistance of the United States.

The Minister said this has been the number one priority of the Government during the bilateral meetings with the U.S government.

MEDIA RELEASE

AIR NIUGINI AND PNG TOURSIM PROMOTION AUTHORITY IN
A JOINT EFFORT TO BOOST DOMESTIC TOURISM.

The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) in an effort to stimulate domestic tourism has provided half a million kina to Air Niugini as travel subsidy to promote domestic tourism in the country through the airline’s extensive range of existing tour packages.

Of the total K500,000, half of that money will go towards promotions in the domestic market while the other half will be used to support and promote the inbound Australian tourism market.
PNGTPA Chief Executive Officer, Eric Mossman in signing the agreement with Air Niugini General Manager, Commercial Paul Abbot in Port Moresby yesterday (Thrs 21st July) said the promotion is timely as travel restrictions are being slowly relaxed after the COVID pandemic with more people now traveling.

He said “ COVID19 brought travel and tourism to a standstill over the last two years, however with the restrictions being slowly lifted and more people now traveling, we hope they can make use of the domestic travel subsidies being offered.

“ Air Niugini as one of our leading industry partners provides a wide range of tour packages, we therefore encourage people to make use of the subsidies by purchasing domestic tour packages from Air Niugini, which in turn will boost domestic tourism.” Mr Mossman said.

Mr Abbot explained that Air Niugini will ensure domestic packages are more accessible in order to stimulate more demand and support the domestic tourism operators.

He said once the travel subsidy is in place, every person that purchases an Air Niugini domestic tour package will be offered a K500 discount. A tour package includes airfares, accommodation, return airport transfers, breakfast and taxes.

“ We hope to make domestic tourism more accessible and easier for everyone to be able to take advantage of the many and varied tourism experiences in our beautiful country. The flow on effect from people traveling and staying domestically will have a positive impact on communities all over the country.”

“Air Niugini has always had great relationship with PNGTPA and this is a shining example of stake holders working together to take domestic tourism to a new level. We look forward to a strong, positive result from this arrangement.” Mr Abbot said

Apart from Air Niugini’s current range of domestic tour packages, the airline will also look to create a new product to come on the market to further support domestic tourism initiatives.

The site of one of our region’s most important battles—Kokoda in Papua New Guinea—was integral in repelling a fierce, determined enemy. Yet a far more deadly invader is on the march through the South Pacific and next year the Kokoda Track will once again be a central battle in the war.

Before Kokoda was ever known, early Adventist missionaries—the Carrs and the Locks—trekked the village trails, taking the transforming gospel to those in spiritual darkness. Over a period of 30 years they created mission stations in Bisiatabu and Efogi. By the time the Australian soldiers famously withstood the Japanese onslaught along this trail and caused a hurried Japanese retreat, most of the people were disciples of Jesus and Seventh-day Adventists. The famous “fuzzy wuzzy angels”, who supported the wounded and carried the injured soldiers, were mostly Adventists. This was real faith in action.

PNGUM president Pastor Kepsie Elodo, who is from Efogi, and my son and I are walking the Kokoda Track in July 2019. We want to thank and encourage God’s people along the track to be faithful and witness to the thousands of Australians who walk it each year. We have already produced a special Signs magazine for the descendants of the “fuzzy wuzzy angels” to give to those they support along the track.

We also want to tackle the modern Pacific threat—diabetes. One in four Pacific Islanders has diabetes, and lifestyle diseases make up 80 per cent of the disease burden in the South Pacific. The SPD Discipleship Ministry Team health focus is supporting the raising of funds for the 10,000 Toes campaign. They have a strategy to prevent diabetes and literally save 10,000 toes. If you would like to walk the Kokoda Track with us, all you have to do is raise funds for the 10,000 Toes campaign. For more information please email pam@10000toes.com. Trekking the Kokoda can still be a grace-filled act of faith.

In July next year, South Pacific Division president Pastor Glenn Townend and his son will head to the famous Kokoda Track to fight a new, deadly enemy.

Did you know that South Pacific nations have the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world? It's so high that the United Nations reports that diabetes and other non-communicable diseases are one of the greatest threats to the region's development.

But there's a new campaign, launched this year, that is committed to changing that statistic. The 10,000 Toes campaign is aimed at preventing and reversing Type II diabetes across the South Pacific. They're aiming to reach 10,000 people, to save 10,000 toes.

So, how can you help? The campaign goal is set at $1 million, and you can donate via the link below. You can also share this post to raise awareness of this deadly disease, and together, we can save lives and limbs!

South Pacific nations have the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world – so high that the United Nations reports that diabetes and other non-communicable diseases are one of the greatest threats to the regions development.

The 10,000 Toes campaign is committed to turning the tide of diabetes to save lives and limbs. This project will:

Equip every Pacific village with the skills and tools to conduct community health assessments for the early detection of diabetes (and other, related chronic diseases)
Train and resource lifestyle coaches to implement programs to prevent, arrest and reverse Type 2 diabetes in every village
Improve the capacity of health professionals working in health systems across the South Pacific to manage diabetes
