Recent interview with the Post Courier on how an Artificial Intelligence–enabled leapfrogging model can help tackle critical healthcare challenges in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), including Papua New Guinea.
From drug shortages to rural access gaps, discussed on how AI can offer practical, scalable solutions—particularly in but not limited to:
- Intelligent, data‑driven medicine supply chains that respond in real time
- Enhanced rural healthcare delivery via telemedicine and AI-augmented frontline workers
- Stronger public health planning powered by predictive analytics
A core message emphasized that AI should not be seen as a luxury reserved for high‑income nations—it is a strategic enabler for LMICs to leapfrog long‑standing systemic inefficiencies.
Equally vital is the importance of public–private partnerships, which bring together governments, healthcare providers, and technology stakeholders to co‑create sustainable and cost‑effective digital health ecosystems.
With a clear roadmap—starting small, launching high-impact pilot projects, and scaling responsibly—Papua New Guinea has a real opportunity to reshape its healthcare system over the coming decade.
Grateful to the Post-Courier team for the opportunity to share these insights.

Another milestone for Pacific International Hospital

We are proud to announce the launch of dialysis services at PIH Lae—bringing life-sustaining renal care closer to the people of Lae and the wider Morobe Province.

Dialysis is essential for patients with kidney failure or end-stage renal disease. Without it, waste and fluid accumulate rapidly, leading to life-threatening complications. Until now, patients and their caregivers often had to relocate to Port Moresby to continue dialysis—or go without treatment altogether.

This new service fills a long-standing gap in the region’s healthcare system.

By establishing dialysis in Lae, we are:
• Expanding access to essential renal replacement therapy
• Reducing the need for relocation and travel
• Lowering the financial burden on patients and families—eliminating costs related to transport, accommodation, and extended stays

At present, the Centre can manage limited sessions per day, with capacity to scale as demand grows. The setup and installation have been successfully completed, and quality assurance processes are in place for implementation.

We are also working closely with our colleagues at ANGAU General Hospital to collaborate in setting up processes to further expand access and serve a larger population in need.

This initiative reflects PIH’s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and delivering quality care across Papua New Guinea.

Care closer to home. Better outcomes for our communities.

From the panel stage at the National Conference on “Artificial Intelligence for Business and Economic Growth” organized by IBS University, sharing perspectives on the evolving role of AI in healthcare, along with the ethical considerations and the need for strong organization & National level policies.

Discussion touched on staged AI adoption at Pacific International Hospital to augment documentation, clinical decision making, and predictive modeling for patient safety. Also shared insights on how Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) such as can leverage from what I call "AI leapfrogging model" —to address persistent healthcare system gaps including limited human resources, medication shortages, supply chain disruptions, clinical decision support, diagnostics, and workforce augmentation, without placing unsustainable pressure on already constrained resources.

In healthcare, we give a part of ourselves to every patient we serve. Even when the odds feel overwhelmingly against recovery, our teams continue to give 100%—driven by duty, compassion, hope, and the belief that every life deserves our very best.
And sometimes, amidst the uncertainty, we witness moments that remind us why we do what we do.

Such is the story of Ms. Kaigerua, who arrived at PIH last month critically unwell—allegedly treated initially as a viral respiratory infection outside—only to present in septic shock, acute renal failure (anuric with Creatinine 964 μmol/L), severe jaundice (Bilirubin 204 μmol/L), severe anaemia, and metabolic encephalopathy. With an APACHE II score of 30 and an estimated 73% mortality, she was admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of complicated malaria.
Yet, with the tireless commitment of every nurse, doctor, technician, and support staff involved—and with God’s grace—she fought her way back. Her recovery is a testament not just to medical skill, but to the spirit of healthcare: perseverance, teamwork, and faith.

Her outcome also echoes an important truth:
A timely and accurate diagnosis at the primary care level could have prevented much of her suffering—and spared her family, insurer, and country significant financial and emotional burden.

Today, her recovery stands as both a celebration and a reminder:
• of the hands that work tirelessly,
• of the systems we must continue to strengthen, and
• of the blessing of health, and our role as vessels in its restoration.

To every healthcare professional giving their all—often unseen, often exhausted, but always committed—thank you. Your impact reaches farther than you know.

Quality healthcare should be accessible, not a burden. That’s why we have been expanding beyond Port Moresby—bringing trusted healthcare services closer to communities, reducing travel costs and the hassle of long journeys for everyday health needs.

Alongside our growing network of hospitals and clinics, the PIH team conducts regular specialist camps in coordination with Provincial Health Authorities, local governance, and community coordinators. These camps deliver specialist care closer to where you live, because we understand the real cost and inconvenience of travel.

Join us in our drive to expand healthcare access to the areas that need it most.
