In healthcare, we give a part of ourselves to every patient we serve. Even when the odds feel overwhelmingly against recovery, our teams continue to give 100%—driven by duty, compassion, hope, and the belief that every life deserves our very best.
And sometimes, amidst the uncertainty, we witness moments that remind us why we do what we do.
Such is the story of Ms. Kaigerua, who arrived at PIH last month critically unwell—allegedly treated initially as a viral respiratory infection outside—only to present in septic shock, acute renal failure (anuric with Creatinine 964 μmol/L), severe jaundice (Bilirubin 204 μmol/L), severe anaemia, and metabolic encephalopathy. With an APACHE II score of 30 and an estimated 73% mortality, she was admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of complicated malaria.
Yet, with the tireless commitment of every nurse, doctor, technician, and support staff involved—and with God’s grace—she fought her way back. Her recovery is a testament not just to medical skill, but to the spirit of healthcare: perseverance, teamwork, and faith.
Her outcome also echoes an important truth:
A timely and accurate diagnosis at the primary care level could have prevented much of her suffering—and spared her family, insurer, and country significant financial and emotional burden.
Today, her recovery stands as both a celebration and a reminder:
• of the hands that work tirelessly,
• of the systems we must continue to strengthen, and
• of the blessing of health, and our role as vessels in its restoration.
To every healthcare professional giving their all—often unseen, often exhausted, but always committed—thank you. Your impact reaches farther than you know.
