This is Samson Kelu, a MOH Ambassador of Season 6

Meet Samson Kelu—Men of Honor Ambassador

Through the vision and determination of Samson Kelu, a proud Men of Honour Ambassador, the people of Goru village on Vitu Island in the Talasea District of West New Britain now have access to clean, safe drinking water, a project made possible with the support of the Digicel PNG Foundation and Samson’s unwavering commitment to his community.

But Samson’s impact goes far beyond infrastructure. As a young leader and role model, he exemplifies integrity, service, and resilience. His actions speak louder than words, inspiring others to lead with purpose and compassion.

Samson has felt the struggles, seen his family and people suffer and asked himself what he and his family can do as ordinary Papua New Guineans, not with wealth or status, but with a desire to work together and unite communities for a common purpose.
“I believe in taking the first step for a better tomorrow, because change begins with me,” he said.

We recognise Samson’s dedication and his unwavering commitment to uplifting his community. His work is creating change that will benefit generations to come.

Ginigoada Supports Communities Through Education & Training in Moresby South

Digicel PNG Foundation supported the Ginigoada Foundation Inc. with a donation of K50,000 towards the Upgrade of Ginigoada Early Learning Centre and Tutu Beach Community Learning & Development Centre.

Ginigoada has been a shining example since its establishment in 2001 as the Ginigoada Bisnis Development Foundation (GBDF). Founded by Dame Carol Kidu, Ginigoada started as a welfare-type NGO focused on personal empowerment through education and training. Over the years, it has evolved to meet the changing needs of Papua New Guineans, especially in the informal economy.

Today, Ginigoada runs programs that make a real difference in communities. These include a FODE Centre supporting 401 students from Pari and Taurama communities, Early Learning Centres for over 200 children across Pari, Taurama, and Tutu, and Community Libraries that will open access to knowledge for Port Moresby and surrounding areas. In addition, Ginigoada operates Training Centres delivering financial literacy and life skills for sustainable livelihoods.

With funding from the Foundation, 130 armrest chairs, 33 tables, 6 solar pumps were purchased, including the construction of an outdoor deck for center's library.

This partnership reflects Digicel PNG Foundation’s commitment to education, empowerment, and community development. Together, we are creating opportunities for individuals to learn, grow, and build better futures.

Ulau Sub-Health Centre Unveils New Labour Ward for Safer Deliveries

A significant milestone in maternal healthcare is being marked in the Aitape-Lumi District with the official launch of a new labour ward at the Ulau Sub-Health Centre. The health facility, operated by the Diocese of Aitape and located in Ulau Village, caters to an estimated 11,000 people across the district, providing an essential lifeline for mothers and families in the surrounding communities.

This transformative project, made possible through a generous K50,000 grant from the Digicel PNG Foundation, represents a major step forward in improving access to safe, reliable, and quality maternal care for expectant mothers in the region.

The initiative was undertaken in response to a pressing need for improved maternal health services. For years, women in the Ulau area have faced the challenge of travelling long distances to access safe delivery facilities, often risking complications due to delayed care. The newly completed labour ward will soon provide a dedicated space for antenatal, delivery, and postnatal services right within their own community once it becomes fully operational.

Construction of the project was completed in just six weeks, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Fr. Patrick Iwu, Health Manager of the Aitape Diocese, along with local youths, skilled carpenters, ward councillors, and the entire Diocese of Aitape Health Services Management Team. Their commitment and teamwork ensured the swift delivery of a facility that now represents a new chapter in the community’s journey toward better health.

One local resident Mr Amok shared, “This project has changed the life situation of our community. We no longer live in fear when our mothers are ready to deliver. It’s a sign of real development.”

✨ Fred Hollows Restoring Sight and Restoring Hope

Earlier this year, nearly 300 people had their sight restored during a major eye care outreach in Simbu Province. In just three weeks, a dedicated team from Fred Hollows Foundation delivered: 2,396 eye consultations, 292 sight-restoring surgeries (mostly cataracts) and 478 pairs of glasses dispensed.

The Fred Hollows PNG Foundation received a grant of K100,0000 under the Community Grants program. The grant assisted the outreach program in Simbu with collaboration from Simbu Provincial Health Authority, and support from New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

This was one of the highest-volume outreaches of 2025, bringing life-changing care to communities who face long travel distances, high costs, and limited access to specialist services.

This outreach didn’t just restore vision; it built local capacity. Eye nurses and trainee doctors gained hands-on experience to continue serving their communities long after the outreach ended.

Digicel PNG Foundation is dedicated to helping communities where no one is left behind.

Transforming Communities in New Ireland Province: WASH Project Strengthens Danu’s Villages Development Hub!

The West Coast Development Foundation (WCDF) has officially launched its brand-new WASH Project in Danu Village, Ward 17, West Coast Sentral Niu Ailan. Supported through a K70,000 grant from the Foundation’s Community Grants Program, this new ablution block enhances and complements the multi-purpose hall that was funded by Digicel Foundation in 2023. Together, these facilities now create a complete and functional space for community training, meetings, and FODE classes.

The launch was especially meaningful as it coincided with Danu’s 50th Golden Jubilee, a celebration honoring elders for their leadership and contributions over the past five decades. 🎉

The multi-purpose hall is already transforming livelihoods. It recently hosted a two-week fisheries training delivered by the National Fisheries College, where 38 participants from across New Ireland graduated with National Fisheries Authority certificates in Small Fishing Operations. Each graduate received an ice cooler, fishing reel, and the Singaut Blo Solwara toolkit to support sustainable marine management. 🌊🐟

Support from partners continues to strengthen the initiative. Niu Ailan Savings & Loan Society donated K2,000 toward establishing a new branch, and the Internal Revenue Commission has committed to delivering tax and financial literacy workshops next year using the new facility.

WCDF Founder Jonathan Mesulam thanked all partners and highlighted that the development journey continues. He also celebrated the center’s educational milestone, with FODE classes now running and the first female Grade 12 graduate since the hall opened in November 2024. 🎓✨

"We sincerely thank Digicel PNG Foundation for its generous support towards the WCDF WaSH project. This funding is vital for improving our training facility, ensuring participants and FODE students have access to a healthy hygiene environment. The facility not only complements our existing center but also helps address literacy challenges and provides life skills training for marginalized youth in rural West Coast communities. These community-driven projects, the first of their kind in our area, are transforming lives, and WCDF is grateful for Digicel PNG Foundation’s continued commitment. On behalf of our team, we look forward to strengthening this partnership to keep empowering young people at the community level," he said.

This is a proud moment for Danu Village, the West Coast, and New Ireland Province—paving the way for the next 50 years of sustainable development and empowered communities! 💪🌊
Digicel Foundation remains committed to empowering communities through strong partnerships and impactful local solutions.

Waniati Development Launches New Building

The Digicel PNG Foundation, through a Community Grant of K100,000, has proudly supported the launch of a new double-storey postnatal care centre for the Waniati Maternal Waiting Home in Eastern Highlands Province. This upgraded maternal waiting home will serve as a safe haven for mothers with high-risk pregnancies travelling from remote communities to access essential care.

The new facility was constructed to address long-standing challenges with overcrowding and limited workspace. With expanded postnatal accommodation and dedicated office areas, the centre now provides a safe, functional environment for volunteers, medical staff, and administrators to deliver improved maternal health services.

“Since the start of the year, Waniati Maternal Waiting Home has hosted three Australian volunteers to strengthen its technical capacity. Limited space forced volunteers to share offices, and postnatal mothers faced overcrowding, creating unsafe conditions. I’m thrilled about the new structure; separate postnatal accommodation will reduce overcrowding and disease risk, and the new admin building will house volunteers and managers. Thank you, Digicel PNG Foundation, for your continued investment in infrastructure,” said Founder of the Waniati Development Association, Mr. Victor Timothy.

Featuring six rooms for mothers and dedicated office spaces for staff and volunteers, the expanded waiting home is expected to increase admissions from 20 to 50 high-risk cases per month, ensuring no woman is left behind due to distance or lack of facilities.

This milestone underscores the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening maternal health services and supporting communities to build safer, more resilient healthcare systems. 💚

DF Celebrates Inclusion at CPP Disability Video Premiere

On 3rd December, the Church Partnership Program (CPP) hosted the premiere of its disability inclusion video, “A Hand Up, Not A Handout”, at Apec Haus in Port Moresby to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The event celebrated inspiring stories of empowerment and inclusion through CPP initiatives across Papua New Guinea.

Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress was the theme for this year with the aim to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Digicel PNG Foundation was honored to be part of this important occasion, confirming its commitment to creating inclusive communities. Through its Community Grants Program, Digicel PNG Foundation has provided vital support to organizations such as Cheshire Disability Services and Callan Services in Buka, enabling them to deliver programs that promote social inclusion and improve the lives of persons living with disabilities.

The event featured a panel discussion with church leaders, private sector representatives, and disability advocates, as well as networking opportunities and booths showcasing disability inclusion efforts. Digicel PNG Foundation’s participation highlighted the role of partnerships in driving positive change and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Applications for the Digicel PNG Foundation Community Grants Program are now open! We encourage disability service providers and community organizations across Papua New Guinea to apply for funding to support initiatives that foster inclusion and empower persons living with disabilities.
