THURSDAY CHECK-IN

Supporting Each Other Matters

We all experience periods in life that feel more stressful or overwhelming than others. during these times, it’s important to not only check-in with ourselves, but also to look out for those around us.

Stress and anxiety can sometimes be more than just temporary feelings, they may be signs that someone is struggling and needs support. A kind word, a listening ear, or simply reaching out can make a meaningful difference.

It’s okay to struggle, but it’s NOT OK to suffer in silence. Take the time to talk to someone or listen to someone who is going through a tough time.

Clean Water and Sanitation Upgrades for Over 400 Students in Western Highlands

In an effort to improve sanitation and hygiene for school children in remote communities, the Digicel PNG Foundation has committed K50,000 through its Community Grants Program to support the construction of ablution facilities and a water tank system at Mokapui Primary School in Western Highlands Province.

The project is spearheaded by the Toga Wanka Development Association, which represents five tribes in the Nebilyer District and serves approximately 4,500 people. Project Lead Shedrick Pokea said, “This community initiative is aimed at addressing the school’s long-standing lack of proper toilets and clean drinking water. The absence of these basic facilities has created ongoing health risks for students, teachers, and the surrounding community, making the project both timely and essential. Through this initiative, the Foundation is helping create a safer, healthier, and more conducive learning environment for over 400 students at Mokapui Primary School. The project promotes hygiene, enhances health standards, and fosters a safe school environment.

For many in the community, the development represents a meaningful step toward long-term progress, reflecting a shared vision for healthier children, stronger educational outcomes, and a school environment that supports dignity and growth. Project Lead Shedrick Pokea described the initiative as a personal achievement, emphasizing his belief that real change comes from contributing positively to the community. The Digicel PNG Foundation continues to partner with community-based organizations to create local solutions to local problems, generating meaningful impact.

THURSDAY CHECK-IN

Self-Care Planning for the Year Ahead

As we move into the second week of February 2026, many of us are settling back into work, preparing to return, or actively searching for new opportunities. This transition period can feel exciting, overwhelming, or a mix of both which is exactly why intentional self-care matters.

Now is the perfect moment to pause and ask yourself what you need to stay grounded, energized, and supported as the year unfolds. Think about the routines that help you feel balanced; ones that are simple and realistic.

Notice where you can set healthier boundaries, because your time and energy are valuable. Make space on purpose for the things that bring you joy or calm. And remember, you don’t have to do everything alone; reaching out to the people you trust is an important part of self-care too.

Digicel Foundation LEED Training Successfully Completed

The Digicel PNG Foundation’s Education Program called the Literacy Enrichment and Educational Development (LEED) successfully delivered its Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop in Lae from 2-6 February.

The week-long training, facilitated by Bilum Books and led on the ground by Sarah White, focused on strengthening key early grade literacy skills essential for elementary learners. These included Speaking and Listening, Reading and Comprehension, Phonics, Common Words, and Writing.

According to Sarah White, “Building foundational literacy is one of the most powerful ways we can empower children. When teachers are confident and well-equipped, students thrive and communities thrive with them.”

This TOT marks the official launch of the LEED Program in three new provinces: New Ireland, Milne Bay and Western Highlands. In addition, the Foundation continues to support the Wau-Waria extension program funded by DFAT, which is reaching over 40 schools across the remote Waria LLG.

Seven senior district and provincial education officers participated in the training. They now lead provincial-level trainings during the Term 1 holidays in April and continue to provide monitoring and support throughout the year.

This year, the LEED program aims to reach an additional 200 schools, expanding on the 200 schools supported last year across Eastern Highlands, Manus and Morobe including Wau-Waria District.

At the conclusion of the training program, a brief graduation ceremony was conducted during which certificates of participation were presented to all participants.

The Foundation remains committed to improving literacy outcomes for young learners across Papua New Guinea.

Foundation Launches New Training Center for Markham Smart Farmers

Digicel PNG Foundation has supported the Markham Smart Farmers Association (MSFA) with K50,000, as they launched the Marayai Resource Centre, a major milestone for farming families in the Markham District. Formed in 2023, MSFA now represents 700 farmers working to strengthen agriculture, empower youth and women, and drive community development.

MSFA is already making an impact through rice cultivation with Trukai Ltd, agribusiness incubation with the Fresh Produce Development Agency and PNG University of Technology, and leadership and youth development programs with The Voice Inc, alongside wider efforts in peace building, rural development and financial literacy.

The new Marayai Resource Centre, will become a community hub for training, workshops, and skills development, supporting farmers to improve their livelihoods and providing a dedicated space for youths, women, and community leaders to connect with development partners.

MSFA President, John Gaif, acknowledged and thanked the Digicel PNG Foundation for its funding support, stating: “We could not have reached this milestone without this support, and we appreciate your commitment to transforming humanity and advancing rural development.”
