In the past, tetanus was a terrifying and poorly understood disease. Because it caused sudden, painful muscle spasms, a locked jaw, and stiff body movements, people long ago believed it was caused by demons or evil spirits. There was no scientific explanation at the time, and many patients, especially those with open wounds from accidents, farming, or war, often died from the illness. Tetanus was commonly known as “lockjaw” because of the severe tightening of the jaw muscles.
Today, we know that tetanus is caused by a bacterium called Clostridium tetani. This bacterium enters the body through cuts or wounds and releases a toxin that attacks the nerves. The toxin makes the muscles tighten uncontrollably, leading to stiffness in the jaw and neck, painful spasms, and in severe cases, the body may bend backward in a rigid, arched position called opisthotonos.
