Benefits of eating fruits and nuts ❤️

The fructose found naturally in fruits is packaged with fiber and antioxidants, which may help to explain why people experience positive health benefits when they eat fruits. Adding berries to a meal can help blunt an insulin spike from high glycemic foods, for instance. The fiber in fruits can help slow the release of the sugar, and fruit phytonutrients can help inhibit the transportation of sugar into our intestinal walls and bloodstream.

Similarly, the fat found in whole plant-based foods comes packaged with health-promoting nutrients, such as fiber and phytonutrients. Nuts can help lower cholesterol and oxidation, as well as improve our arterial function and blood sugar levels. Just a few small servings of nuts a week may increase our lifespan and lower our cancer risk. Removing saturated animal fat from our diet and substituting in avocados may lead to a significant drop in cholesterol and triglycerides. However, simply adding avocado without also reducing saturated animal fat intake does not appear to result in any benefits to cholesterol.

Adhering to just four simple healthy lifestyle factors—not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising, and following a healthy diet (eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less meat)—could potentially have a strong impact on the prevention of chronic diseases. We’re talking nearly 80 percent less chronic disease risk and slashing diabetes risk by 93 percent, dropping heart attack risk by 81 percent, cutting stroke risk in half, and reducing cancer risk by 36 percent.

Researchers estimated that following a healthy lifestyle could add more years to your life, even from 50 years of age. How many more years? If you’re 50 right now and take just basic care of yourself, instead of living only to 79 if you’re a woman and 75½ if you’re a man, you could enjoy an average life expectancy of 93 if you’re a woman and 87½ if you’re a man. That's an extra 14 years for women and 12.2 years for men!

In the United States alone every year, there are a half million heart attacks, a half million strokes, a million new cases of diabetes, and a million new cancer diagnoses. The potential for preventing disease and death from chronic diseases is enormous.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a carcinogenic nitrosamine. It has not only been found in certain prescription drugs, but also in foods such as processed meat and beverages like beer. We know NDMA can transfer through the placenta, and this may explain the relationship between consumption of cured meat during pregnancy and the risk of childhood brain tumors. Indeed, hot dog consumption during pregnancy may increase childhood brain tumor risk by 33 percent, and sausage consumption may increase it by 44 percent. Bacon consumption may increase childhood brain tumor odds by 60 to 70 percent. But, it’s not just processed meat. Researchers have also found NDMA in poultry products. Half of a chicken breast contains 110 nanograms of NDMA, which is more than the FDA's acceptable daily intake limit of 96 nanograms per day. Raw poultry doesn’t have any NDMA; it’s created during the cooking process.

Additionally, dry-heat cooking of meat, like broiling or grilling, creates airborne NDMA, releasing this "very potent carcinogenic compound" into the air. Even if you’re only eating a salad in a charcoal grill restaurant, just being indoors where meat is cooked could pose a cancer risk.

Interestingly enough, one of the best-selling drugs in history, Zantac, was pulled from the market—a drug that brought in billions of dollars—because it contained a probable carcinogen that exceeded the acceptable daily limit, but there may be even more of the contaminant in a single serving of chicken. Why aren’t they pulling the poultry off the shelves, too?

Hibiscus really shines when it comes to high blood pressure. We’re still not sure why it works, but hibiscus appears to boost nitric oxide production, which may help our arteries relax and dilate better. Within an hour of drinking hibiscus tea, the antioxidant power of your bloodstream shoots up as your system absorbs the tea’s phytonutrients.
