MAN SENTENCED TO SIX (6) MONTHS IMPRISONMENT FOR BEATING DOG. Last February 8, Judge Lady Ivy Vanity Velasco of Malabon City MeTC Branch 56 sentenced Jojo Garillo to six (6) months imprisonment for severely injuring a dog.

In January 2023, Garillo had hit the dog with a heavy piece of wood causing lacerations on the dog's eyelid, a swollen mandible and the dislocation of his first cervical vertebrae. According to evidence, Garillo had hit the dog because the animal had accidentally wandered into his kitchen and scattered some pots and pans.

Marilyn Gacutanan, owner of the dog - an aspin (native dog) named Ungasis -approached PAWS for help because she was distraught about her beloved dog being beaten in such way and the fact that Garillo was unapologetic.
"Pwede naman nyang itaboy lang. Aksidente lang nakalabas yung a*o ko at mabait yun. Ngayon, sabi ng vet, di na daw pwedeng magsuot ng collar si Ungasis. Harness lang daw kase merong dislocation sa neck area. Sana matuto ang mga tao na hindi maging ganung kalupit at maging mas understanding sa mga hayop."

The Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines or Republic Act 8485, as amended by RA 10631 makes unlawful the torture or maltreatment of any animal. Penalties range from fines up to P250,000 and imprisonment of up to 3 years. Most cases do not reach courts because of witnesses' refusal to file affidavits against the animal offenders. Police officers and barangay officials are also not immediately alerted to acts of animal cruelty when they are in progress so that the perpetrators can be arrested.

If animal offenders are not caught in the act by law enforcement officers (police), PAWS offers legal assistance in the filing of cases with the Prosecutor's Office.

We must believe…

When we look at all the tragedy and despair visited upon farmed animals, both legally and illegally, it is easy to feel an overwhelming sense of disempowerment. However, we must believe that we have a choice: that each one of us, as individuals, has the power to change the dire trajectory of the planet through the choices we make.

We can do this best by choosing not to succumb to negativity. To not give it oxygen; to not feed it, for it will surely consume you. Instead, celebrate all that is good in the world and all that we can make good. Find the small things in your day that lift you up, the little beacons of hope. Seize them, run with them and tell others about them.

In this spirit, we tell you the story of Camry: a wee one-week-old orphan lamb found at large by a kind heart who refused to look the other way, however easy that may have been. Taken to a nearby vet for assessment, his sweet nature stole more hearts. From there, he made his way to sanctuary, where he claimed even more.

Camry, with his little furry chest that makes him look like an ovine version of Sean Connery, comes more and more into his own each day. He does so as his good buddies do what good buddies do best—cheer him on. He is warm, gentle and friendly, never ceasing to brighten our day—a natural anti-depressant, if you like.

One could say he has repaid the kindness afforded him many times over through the unbridled joy he brings to the world.

While we could despair over the circumstances of Camry’s abandonment, we choose not to. We choose to celebrate the goodness of the human hearts that saved him. Good hearts just like those that dwell within us all. Ones that are often desperately wanting to surface, yet lie buried under layers of family history or social conditioning.

So please remember this: We all make mistakes, head down the wrong path or make poor life choices, at times. But we must believe in the transformative power of kindness. For no act of kindness happens in isolation, as Camry’s story shows us. It has a ripple effect that can reverberate for days and even reach across the globe.

Today, if you only do one thing, make it a kind one—because your kindness can change the world. One small lamb at a time.
