To recognize the commitments of the Health Education and Promotion Officers (HEPOs) in the Ilocos Region, the Department of Health (DOH) Ilocos Center for Health Development (CHD) conducted its first HEPO Summit on November 28-29, 2024 at the Thunderbird Resorts and Casinos in Poro Point, City of San Fernando, La Union.
The annual HEPO Summit shall be a venue for sharing and awarding best practices in all settings, namely healthy communities, healthy workplaces, and healthy learning institutions.
In healthy communities, among the hailed best health promotion practices were: the Strengthening HPV Immunization towards Elimination through Leadership Development Against Cervical Cancer of Banna, Ilocos Norte; Bantay Kalusugan: Serbisyo Salun-at at Idanon iti Komunidad, Pagadalan ken Pagtrabahuan, of Bantay, Ilocos Sur; Sustainable Interventions to Break Hunger, Achieve Zero Malnutrition and increase Literacy of Bacnotan, La Union; and Durungan Sa Dugong Hatid, Karunungaโy Batid of Agno, Pangasinan.
In healthy workplaces, the following hospitals were commended for their best health promotion practices: We Care, We Cure, We Can! of Metro Vigan Hospital; Steps to a Healthier You of Caba District Hospital; Hearts, Heads, and Hands for HIV of Karmelli Clinic Hospital Incorporation; and Batang Bibo: Naaalagaan sa Pamamagitan ng Angkop na Tulong Medikal at Dental ng Ilocos Sur District Hospital Tagudin.
In healthy learning institutions, Las-Ud Elementary School, Anda National High School, and Sagpatan Elementary School were cited as national awardees for the Health Schools Category. Taguiporo Elementary School, Ambalayat Integrated School, and Danac Elementary School were praised for being national awardees for the last mile schools category.
DOH Ilocos Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco congratulated the awardees and encouraged the HEPOs to continue their health promotion initiatives in order to drive meaningful change in their respective settings.
To further the learnings of the Ilocos Region HEPOs, Dr. Dominic A. Maddumba, Officer in Charge- Director III of the Health Promotion Bureau discussed Health Literacy and Social and Behavior Change Communication emphasizing the
seven (7) Cโs of effective communication.
In addition, Ms. Alyzza Vienn M. Eclavea, Supervising Health Program Officer of the Program Management, Policy, and Research Division of the Health Promotion Bureau discussed the Health Impact Assessment with HEPOs and members of the local health board of select provinces and Dagupan City.
The active participation of the HEPOs fostered collaboration, and camaraderie during the 2-day summit, a testament to their dedication as Kampeon ng Kalusugan!
