Notably recognized for his leadership in the administration of Eye Ear Nose and Throat healthcare in Angeles City and Pampanga, Ruben de Guzman Henson, Jr. is a visionary in developing new, innovative approaches to Eye, Ear Nose and Throat health care delivery in the new century as President/ Director of the new non-profit Clinica Henson Eye and Ear Research Foundation. Henson takes an active role in developing initiatives and pro-active programs which meet the mutual needs of Eye, Ear Nose and Throat patients to encourage cost-effective and patient-friendly health care. Under his leadership, the new Foundation is on the look-out for grants to fund research and investigate new developments and new trends in eye and ear care and evaluate new models of health care delivery in this field. Dr. Ruben Henson, Jr. has done a lot of charitable work ministering to indigents by starting the "Operation Catarata" while still a young Jaycee member in the early 70's. All these years, he has helped hundreds of patients coming from the whole province gain back their eyesight through his free cataract program. With the Foundation, he hopes to do this on a bigger scale covering the entire Central Luzon with the help of his son, who is also an Ophthalmologist, Raoul D. In the field of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Dr. Ruben Henson likewise has done free cleft lip and cleft palate surgery for many years on numerous patients; mostly among young children who gained back their smiles and self-esteem after the procedure. Continuing this tradition is his younger son, Ruben D. Henson III, M.D. an ENT specialist, who now performs the same procedure to indigent young patients. Dr. Ruben G. Henson, Jr. began his medical practice in 1966 at the De Guzman Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital along Henson Street. He had seven years of specialization, first at the Elmhurst City Hospital, New York City, U.S.A.in 1959 after graduating from the University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine in Manila. As the Chief Resident in ENT in 1961, he then took up post-graduate studies in Otolaryngology at New York University, an affiliate of Elmhurst City Hospital. Not content with his three-year Otolaryngology training, Dr. Henson decided to take another specialty and also pursued a Basic Course in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He then later took his two-year Residency at Toronto East General Hospital in Toronto Canada. In 1975, he also underwent post-graduate studies in cosmetic surgery at UC Davies in Sacramento, California in 1975. In 1994, Dr. Henson joined St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City first as a visiting consultant with a clinic at the old Medical Arts Building. In 2001, as a full consultant he moved into his new clinic at Suite 1405 at the 14th Floor of the North Tower of the Cathedral Heights at St. Luke's Medical Center. Dr. Henson is board certified both in the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology and in Otolaryngology. He is a fellow of the Philippine College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. At present, he is the Section Chief of the Voice Center and Apnea Sleep Center of St. He is likewise a consultant at the recently opened Cosmetic Surgery Center there, and at the AUF Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Henson is currently a member of the Philippine Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and a Charter Member of Central Luzon Society of Ophthalmology. He is a Charter Member and a Director of the Philippine Society for Cosmetic Surgery and a member of the International Society of Cosmetic Surgery, Philippine Medical Association and a past president of the Pampanga Medical Society and Angeles City Medical Society. After high school, the Henson children decided to pursue medical courses and eventually two of them graduated from the UST College of Medicine. After graduation, the eldest son, Raoul Paolo D. Henson, M.D., went to California, U.S.A. to take-up a Basic Course in Ophthalmology at Stanford University. He then came back and took his 3-year residency in Ophthalmology at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City. He pursued his Fellowship in Oculoplasty (Plastic Surgery of the Eye) in Hawaii with Dr. Jorge Camara at the Saint Francis Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. While in Honolulu, Raoul took a trip to California to take a course in Lasik Surgery. He then went back to Hawaii to finish his fellowship and after this proceeded to Arizona to observe for another 3 months at a Lasik Center there. He then traveled to Monterrey, Mexico for a hands-on training in Lasik from Dr. Jesus Vidaurri, a protege of Dr. Baraquer of Colombia, South America. When Raoul came back he was ready to be a full-time consultant at Clinica Henson and at St. He just recently joined Makati Medical Center as a consultant in oculoplasty. Ruben D. also graduated from the UST College of Medicine and had his ENT Residency at the UST Hospital for four years. He then had his fellowship in EAR (Neuro-Otology) also at UST Hospital for a year. While still a Resident, Ruben went to Hong Kong and Seoul, Korea to observe the latest in Ear Surgery. In June 2005, he flew to India for a month-long observation in Inner Ear Surgery with Professor Dr. K.K.R. Ramalingam and Dr. Ravi Ramalingam at the KKR Ear Institute in Chennai (Madras), India. He now holds clinic at Clinica Henson every Monday to Saturday. The second-generation Hensons are actively practicing in separate specialties that complement each other. A state-of-the-art hearing center and eye laser center that includes a YAG laser are also now available. The new Clinica Henson Eye Ear Nose and Throat Foundation, Inc. is a landmark specialty hospital. It caters not only to local patients but also to patients from foreign lands as well, with the state-of-the-art Eye and ENT equipment along with the latest medical equipments it provides.
