Stop Using Cotton Buds to Clean Your Ears!

Using cotton buds may feel satisfying, but it can actually do more harm than good:
โš ๏ธ Pushes wax deeper
โš ๏ธ Increases risk of eardrum perforation
โš ๏ธ Can cause infections or injury
๐Ÿ‘‚ Your ears are self-cleaningโ€”no need to poke inside!

If you have a wax problem, see an ENT specialist.

Protect your ears. Skip the cotton buds!

As a practicing physician, I have consistently observed a troubling trend: patients frequently come in demanding antibiotics with comments like, โ€ Alarmingly, many of them jump straight to this request before even discussing their symptoms. Additionally, some patients express disappointment when I determine that antibiotics are not warranted, even if they are dealing with something as common as the flu or a viral illness.

Antibiotics are designed to combat infections caused by ๐—•๐—”๐—–๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—” in both humans and animals. They work by either killing the bacteria or inhibiting their ability to grow and multiply. However, they are ๐—จ๐—ก๐—ก๐—˜๐—–๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ฆ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ฌ and ineffective for conditions that are ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง ๐—ข๐—™ ๐—•๐—”๐—–๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—”๐—Ÿ ๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—š๐—œ๐—ก, such as viral or fungal infections! Our caution in prescribing antibiotics is rooted in a serious concern: we aim to prevent antimicrobial resistance!

It's a phenomenon where bacteria adapt to outsmart the antibiotics designed to defeat them, rendering those drugs ineffective for future use. This could affect not just an individual, but the entire community.

This trend is not limited to my practice; I believe other healthcare professionals are experiencing it as well. It reflects a ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ and the expectations surrounding treatment. Antibiotics arenโ€™t a cure-all or something to be taken lightly; they shouldnโ€™t be treated like candy that anyone can pop whenever they feel unwell.

So, the next time you insist on getting antibiotics, consider the moment when you find yourself confined to a hospital bed for whatever reason at 80 or even 30 years old, realizing that no antibiotic will be effective for you then.

Letโ€™s work together to raise awareness and correct this misconception. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿปโ˜บ๏ธ

For many years, head and neck cancer in the Philippines has been strongly linked to smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel nut chewing. However, doctors are now seeing a new trend: younger patients and non-smokers are being diagnosed with head and neck cancer.
