WHAT IS EJECTION FRACTION IN A 2D ECHO?

A 2D echocardiogram, or cardiac ultrasound, is important in the diagnosis of many cardiac conditions, especially heart failure. In heart failure, the heart is not able to pump blood as well as it should. The body's tissues are then deprived of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood. Symptoms may include unusual fatigue, shortness of breath during activity or at rest, inability to lie flat in bed (needing to be propped up on several pillows), or swelling of the ankles and feet.

A 2D echo can measure the heart's ejection fraction (EF), a measure of the heart's pumping function. It is the percentage of blood in the heart's left ventricle pumped out with each beat. The normal EF is 50% and above. The classification of EF is as follows:

40% or less = heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF)
41-49% = heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmEF)
50% or more but with signs and symptoms of heart failure = heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
