So we had a surprise visit from the FDA on April 17, 2024...3 working days after this year's National PPhA Convention held in Iloilo City. It is to check if we already have the Medical Device Retailer LTO but since we were never inspected for the Drugstore LTO, dinamay na.

Alam niyo ba na dalawa ang lisensya ng isang botika? Ang mga binibilhan niyo ng gamot, may mga lisensya ba? May pharmacist ba? (this is a major violation in an FDA inspection)

The truth is,kahit gaano ka ka prepared, nakakakabog na mabisita ng FDA. But at the end of the day, the public is assured that the establishment follows the regulations. Kaya wag itrato ang botika na parang tindahan. Ang tindahan, walang sagutin kung ano man Ang mangyari sa yo. Bawal Sila magbenta ng gamot nang walang lisensya galing FDA.

Anyway, just a little more work and CAPA (Corrective Action and Preventive Action Plan) is ready to be submitted. 👏👏👏

Just because you were able to buy without presenting anything for these medicines doesn't mean that they are Over-the-Counter!

According to the Republic Act 2382, or the Philippine Medical Act, physicians (not the nurse, the midwife or other health workers) are the only ones authorized to prescribe medicines.

Republic Act 10918 [New Pharmacy Law] Section 33 explicitly states that "Prescription medicines may be dispensed only by a duly registered and licensed pharmacist and ONLY WITH A VALID PRESCRIPTION of a physician, dentist, or veterinarian."

Dispensing prescription without a valid (meaning updated and complete with all the required details and signed by the prescribing MD) prescription is a MAJOR violation in FDA's inspection findings.

Inconsistencies may cause confusion but with your help, we can improve the practice of pharmacy in the country as it is currently far from ideal. As a consumer, you can contribute by reporting non-compliant pharmacies via email at report@fda.gov.ph. Please do it with the right intent and through the right channel.

Domperidone Reclassified as Prescription Drug

FDA issued Circular No.2024-001 dated March 15, 2024 changing the classification of Domperidone from OTC (over the counter), to Prescription drug.

What is Domperidone?
Domperidone is a prokinetic (speeds up the movement of the stomach and bowel) and anti emetic (treatment of nausea and vomiting)

Why was it classified as a prescription medicine?
An epidemiological study showed that Domperidone is associated with increased risk of serious ventricular arrythmias or sudden cardiac death.

What happens now
You can no longer buy Domperidone without written advice from a licensed doctor

All Domperidone existing in the market will be withdrawn from the market to update the labeling materials and package inserts. The label shall now bear the Rx symbol and the information on the inserts updated to reflect the corresponding Contraindications, Special Warnings and Precautions.

Any advertisement and/or sales promo of Domperidone shall be discontinued accordingly.

Did you know?

A pharmacy has two retail licenses: One for drugs, and another one for medical devices (pregnancy kits, syringes, condoms, lubricants, etc.)

A pharmacy owner goes great lengths to register the business and comply with regulations that cover the establishment and the practice of pharmacy.

Please keep this in mind when getting medicines from the sari sari store or from individuals peddling medicines on the streets.

If they don't care enough to legalize their business, what makes you think they care about you or your safety?

Caring does not always mean you get what you want especially if you don't need them.
