The poor wages in the Philippines compared to the higher wages for caregivers abroad are the reason why Filipino caregivers usually prefer to work out of the country. We must provide caregivers with a higher wage, whether they offer care at home, in nursing homes, or in other senior care facilities. Fairness, risk, supply, and quality of care are the four reasons we need to pay caregivers more. We currently pay them a low wage, which is unfair considering the risks of the job. The supply of workers is decreased as a result of the risky work and poor wages, which eventually lower the quality of care. Whether self-interest or fairness is what drives us, let’s treat our caregivers well so that they will treat us well whenever we need their care.
