Riverside Medical Center, Inc. (RMCI) has achieved a milestone by successfully performing Transcatheter Device Closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) on two premature infants weighing 1.9kg and 2.2kg. These complex procedures, currently exclusive to RMCI in the Negros region, were conducted at the RMCI Catheterization Laboratory within the Riverside Center of Excellence Building in Bacolod City.

The procedures were led by RMCI’s Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Judah G***r, under the proctorship of Dr. Do Nguyen Tin, Head of the Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Dr. Tin, who mentored Dr. G***r during his training in Vietnam, oversaw the use of the Amplatzer Piccolo Occluder and Vascular Plug. They were joined by Dr. Mylah Alfeche, a Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist from Iloilo, and Dr. Mary Grace Manganti, who provided thoracovascular anesthesia care.

The patients, born at 33 and 36 weeks and under the neonatal care of Dr. Ma. Socorro Fatima Calitis-Santos, had been dependent on ventilatory support due to their condition.

Dr. Tin praised RMCI’s facilities, expressing confidence in the hospital’s capability to handle similar cases in the future. Dr. G***r noted that RMCI remains the only hospital in Negros equipped to perform this specialized procedure. Remarkably, Dr. G***r is the second operator in the country to use the Amplatzer Piccolo Device, marking only the third case performed nationwide.

The successful completion of these cases highlights RMCI’s role as a leader in advanced pediatric care in the region, with its highly skilled team and state-of-the-art facilities.
