What is the difference between Primary Care and Primary Eye Care?

When you have your eyes examined, your optometrist should provide primary care to assess potential diseases such hypertension, diabetes, heart ailments & cognitive impairments to name a few because these will affect your visual performance.

Primary Eye Care is provided by an optometrist to identify the presence of early signs of common eye problems such as dry eye (pterygium), cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cranial nerve palsy, binocular vision problems and the management of refractive errors with references to aberrations, retinoscopic findings, photo refraction, corneal curvatures & the use of ophthalmic solutions.

These are your normal expectations from a licensed optometrist.

Today I had a patient who won as a first timer in politics. His advocacy is promote good eye health. I thought the World Sight Day on 29 October 2025 is a good opportunity.

Complicated!

This 5 yo girl was seen by a developmental pediatrician and had a risk of attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) which is now under control. A colleague referred her to me for cycloplegic refraction. She has mid risk myopia, high corneal astigmatism and borderline keratoconus aside from bilateral amblyopia. In this photo, I was showing what she can only see at 20 ft. with her first eyeglasses.
There will be numerous interventions and strict monitoring. She has stopped using her gadgets and will do more outdoor activities.

A Doctor of Optometry rules out systemic diseases, eye diseases, neuro optometry problems, among others based on scientific evidences before he can prescribe eyeglasses.
