n in the country, committed to provide quality life-saving services that protect the life and dignity especially of indigent Filipinos in vulnerable situations. It is the tale of hundreds of thousands of ordinary people who devoted their time and resources to help the poorest of the poor. Professionally trained and truly compassionate, these men and women are ready to lend a helping hand to those in need – whoever, whenever and wherever they may be. In all its 67 years of reputable existence, the Philippine Red Cross has lived through many changes that were intended to help more people. Where it used to be involved only in providing blood and in disaster-related activities, the Philippine Red Cross now focuses on a holistic approach to uplift the condition of the most vulnerable. Where it used to offer short-term palliatives, it now offers a wider array of humanitarian services ranging from preventive medicine to therapeutic counseling, to youth leadership. At present, the Philippine Red Cross provides six major services: Blood Services, Disaster Management Services, Safety Services, Health Services, Social Services, Red Cross Youth and Volunteer Services. All of them embody the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement – humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. These values guide and inspire all Red Cross staff and volunteers, to whom being a Red Crosser is more than just a philosophy but a way of life. Join the Red Cross. We take pride in urging all Filipinos to take part in the heroism of the Philippine Red Cross by becoming a full-pledged member, volunteer, or donor. PRC JOINS IFRC, ICRC, AND 191 NATIONAL SOCIETIES IN CELEBRATING WORLD RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT DAY 2026

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) joins the global celebration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8, 2026, marking 79 years of nonstop commitment to helping communities worldwide alongside the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 191 Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies.

The international observance follows the theme “United in Humanity,” meant to celebrate the volunteers and staff whose support and compassion toward communities shine amidst crises and emergencies around the world.

The day also serves as a call to uphold and protect humanitarian work, ensuring timely support is given to those most in need.

“The Philippine Red Cross volunteers are the backbone of the entire organization. Without their help, it would be nearly impossible to expand our reach and services in the farthest regions of the country. This day is meant to celebrate not only them, but also the millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers worldwide who continue to serve humanity,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement grew from an idea by Jean Henry Dunant in 1859 after witnessing the suffering brought by the Battle of Solferino in Italy.

Today, the Movement is composed of the ICRC, the IFRC, and 191 National Societies working together as the world’s largest humanitarian network.

“The Philippine Red Cross will always look up to the ICRC, IFRC, and our fellow National Societies, and celebrate their humanitarian achievements across the world. Rest assured, the organization will continue strengthening its services in the country while remaining united with the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in serving those most in need,” PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang stated.

The PRC commits its adherence to this year’s theme and ensures its application in the various humanitarian services it offers nationwide.

‘BRIDGING THE GAP’
Bago LGU, Philippine Red Cross ink deal for Blood Samaritan Fund

In a bid to ensure that no patient in the community is denied of life-saving blood due to lack of access and financial constraints, the City Government of Bago, through its Primary Care Facility, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Red Cross for the implementation of the Blood Samaritan Fund program in the city.

Mayora Mayette Javellana signed the agreement with Philippine Red Cross Negros Occidental – Bacolod City Chapter Chairman Carlos Ganihong and Chapter Administrator Rita Benita Mirasol at the Community Center this afternoon, May 6.

They were joined by Councilor Robert Javellana, who is also a director of the Philippine Red Cross – Negros Occidental, and City Health Officer Dr. Ferdinand Ramon Mayoga.

Mayora Mayette, in her message, said the agreement signing for the Blood Samaritan Fund under the banner of Give Blood Bago is a big dream come true and a milestone for the city.

“We are making a powerful promise that no life in this city will be left without hope when it truly matters the most,” she said, stressing that “blood is life and in every drop that is willingly given, there’s courage, compassion, and love.”

The program, Mayora Mayette said, is a reminder that heroism does not always wear uniform, sometimes it simply rolls up a sleeve and chooses to give.

“As a city mayor, I stand here very inspired with the spirit of every Bagonhon who’s willing to take part in this mission. Through this partnership, we’re building not just a stronger health system but a community that looks after one another where kindness flows as free as the blood that saves lives,” she added.

The Philippine Red Cross operates a network of blood service facilities nationwide, with capabilities to make blood readily available to patients in need and prioritize issuance of blood to members, their dependents and referrals.

Under the agreement, the local government has allocated funds for the Blood Samaritan Program of the Philippine Red Cross. The two parties shall have mutual coordination in facilitating financial assistance among indigent patients.

For his part, Ganihong said the partnership is a powerful expression of what can be achieved when public service and humanitarian action move hand in hand.

Ganihong underscored that many are facing life-threatening situations and urgently need blood. For many of them, the challenge is not only availability but also affordability.

“The Blood Samaritan Fund exists precisely to bridge that gap – ensuring that financial limitation will never stand between the patient and the gift of life,” he said, adding that the agreement strengthens the lifeline for the most vulnerable members of the community.

Also present during the MOA signing were City Legal Officer Atty. Edward Joseph Cuansing, Medical Officer IV Arianne Angeli Panisa, Medical Officer III Dr. Kevin Valdez, and Medical Technologist III Glenly Casona, among other personnel of the Primary Care Facility.

Together, we are united in humanity, now and always.

Together, let's continue to pave the way for more compassion for another 107 years and beyond.

Today marks the 107th anniversary of the founding of the IFRC.

The IFRC, formerly called the League of Red Cross Societies, was established in 1919 in Paris at the Regina Hotel by representatives from five founding Red Cross societies. 🇯🇵🇬🇧🇺🇸🇫🇷🇮🇹

For over 100 years, the solidarity and dedication within the IFRC network have been unwavering. Thank you to all our volunteers and our staff.
