Every stage demands a spectacle of light, steady feet, and an unbreakable smile, yet these are merely the armor shielding a soul brittle with the fear of falling short. Many young Filipinas see pageantry presented as a public display of perfection. However, this image ignores a harder reality: What does it really take to be seenโnot just admired, but understood?
Growing up, Kate Arthel G. Be**no was often recognized for her appearance before anything else. Underneath it all, she was academically inclined and introspective, slowly building a voice she hoped would carry real purpose. While pageantry wasnโt part of her original plan, it arrived as an unexpected invitation from those who saw her potential. What started as a simple curiosity soon opened doors she hadnโt imagined, helping her realize that she had much more to offer the world than she once thought.
At 19, Kate stepped into her first competition, Mr. & Ms. SDCA Medtech 2025. Her debut was marked by a series of wins, where she was named Ms. SDCA Medtech - Heart and recognized with awards for Best in Formal Wear, Ms. Photogenic, and Best in Uniform. From there, her journey gained even more purpose as she became the Ms. SDCA Ambassador of Goodwill 2025, and later, the regional stage of Mutya ng PRISAA, where she rose from 1st Runner-Up in the division level to Regional Grand Winner 2026, earning Best in Talent and Best in Evening Gown.
But the trajectory from campus stage to regional crown was not as seamless as it appeared.
โThere were always doubts,โ Kate shares. โIt always feels like Iโm a first-timer.โ
Each competition brought unfamiliar groundโnew expectations, stronger contenders, and greater responsibility. Representing her school was one thing; representing an entire province like Cavite was another. The preparation stretched longer, the pressure heavier. โYou carry a bigger name,โ she explains, โand the responsibility grows with it.โ
What she once thought was a space defined by beauty alone began to shift. Through her own research and her experience in larger competitions, Kate realized that pageantry offered far more than a spotlightโit offered a platform. โI want to be remembered not just by my beauty,โ she says, โbut by how I express myselfโby what I stand for.โ
As a medical technology student, her advocacy is rooted in SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). She speaks passionately about accessible healthcare and the vital role of medical technologists.
โThereโs a misconception that medical technologists are just โpucho-puchoโ or not that essential inside the hospital,โ she says. โBut that is very wrongโwe help in diagnosing patients.โ For her, the reality of the laboratory is one of absolute precision, where there is simply no room for mistakes.
Her work extends into communities, where she participates in outreach effortsโeducating young people on nutrition, health, and well-being. For Kate, this is the true essence of pageantry: โItโs about what a woman can do for her community, not just for herself.โ Yet she remains grounded in the realities of the industry.
While pageantry has evolved to become more inclusive, she acknowledges that certain standards still linger. โThere are years of patriarchal expectations placed on women,โ she reflects. โAnd while we are progressing, there is still room to be more inclusive.โ
Offstage, Kate returns to her core through art and musicโallowing her to reconnect with herself. Pageantry may have pushed her into the spotlight, but it also helped her find her voice within it.
Her journey is far from perfect and she embraces that truth fully. โThe journey is not supposed to be linear,โ she says. โItโs always progressive.โ
Because for all the titles she carries, her greatest victory is not merely measured in awardsโbut in her courage.
The courage to show up despite doubt.
The courage to speak despite fear.
The courage to believe, even when belief does not come easily.
And perhaps, that is what it really takes to be seenโnot through a facade of perfection or the comfort of certainty, but the firm and bold decision to keep going anyway.
