JUST IN: The Philippines has detected ONE new mpox (monkeypox) case — the first in the country since the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

The Department of Health says it was reported to the agency on August 18.

This is the country’s 10th mpox case. The DOH said the last mpox case was reported in December 2023.

“All previous cases were isolated, cared for, and have since recovered,” the department said. | via Kaycee Valmonte/Rappler

*Note: The 16 deaths occurred in December 2023.*

*Due to ongoing migration of the Vaccine Information Management System (VIMS) by the DICT, the DOH-EB will not be able to generate updated vaccine accomplishment until said migration has been resolved. Rest assured that any data submitted or edited through the VIMS application are still accepted and duly processed.

WEATHER UPDATE:

PAGASA gives an update on Super Typhoon Mawar.
It says the weather disturbance is located 2,215 kilometers east of Visayas and there is a high possibility it will enter the Philippine area of responsibility this Saturday (May 27) instead of Friday because it is moving slower.

Once it enters PAR, it will be named "Betty."
PAGASA adds there is only a low chance it will make landfall in the Philippines, but it could enhance the southwest monsoon or Habagat.

PAGASA says rains could dampen parts of western Luzon, Visayas, and even Mindanao on Sunday and next Monday.
