โEven as volunteers, aside from having less time with our families, we even get criticized and accused. Nevertheless, even if we receive hurtful remarks, we harbored it as our strength to continue our tasks as Barangay Health Workers. Because it is also our joy and passion to serve.โ Ms. Marites S. Taguibos, Barangay Health Worker (BHW) of Tuba, Benguet, told her tale of her journey as a volunteer health worker (commonly known as Barangay Health Worker).
Barangay Health Workers serve as the frontliners in the barangay in providing basic health services. They play a vital role in accomplishing the primary healthcare approach towards health empowerment with the provision of accessible and acceptable health services at the barangay level.
They traverse through different terrains in their respective communities to educate the people on health priorities and updates such as available vaccines, contraceptives, and other health needs for the community. BHWs conduct such education campaigns house-to-house to ensure that everyone is informed.
They are also โrecord-keepersโ of health data, activities, and events. If needed, BHWs assist the health centers, from the doctors down to the midwives, as health centers are usually understaffed.
BHWs bridge the gap between the marginalized to achieve health for all.
