A child is born with approximately 300 bones, while an adult has 206. Many of the smaller bones in a child fuse together as they grow, resulting in the reduced number of bones in adulthood. These bones are divided into two main categories: the axial skeleton (80 bones) and the appendicular skeleton (126 bones).
