WHAT IS SHINGLES?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox.

After a person gets chickenpox or is exposed to the varicella zoster virus, the virus stays inactive inside the body for life. As you age, your immune system naturally weakens, which may allow the usually inactive virus to reactivate causing shingles.

PERTUSSIS/WHOOPING COUGH ALERT

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, spreads easily through respiratory droplets from infected individuals. While it can affect people of all ages, babies, young children, and pregnant women are particularly susceptible to severe symptoms.

Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent pertussis. The pertussis vaccine is included in the DOH Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and it is freely provided for young children at local health care units. Additionally, vaccines against pertussis are also available for older children and adults.

Consult your doctor to learn how you can access these vaccines.
