A cancer specialist reminds the public that prevention, protection and early detection remains the best ways to keep cancer at bay and manage.

During the Free Cancer Screening Program held at Malcolm Square on Feb. 24, 2025, Cancer Specialist and Medical Oncologist Dr. Sachiko Estreller emphasized the urgency of observing cancer prevention and protection measures to help avoid contracting the disease.

She said early detection is key to managing and treating the dreaded illness.

Estreller said cancer remains as the second leading cause of death in the city.

She revealed the top five most common cancers in the Philippines and offered the symptoms, causes and preventive measures for all.

The number one most common cancer is breast cancer which primarily affects women. One of its earliest signs is a lump in the breasts. Dr. Estreller advised women to undergo mammogram screening at the age of 40 for early detection of potential signs of cancer.

Lung cancer follows as the second most common type, often presenting with persistent coughing and phlegm with blood. Heavy smokers, particularly those aged 50 and above, are encouraged to undergo a chest CT scan to check for any developing masses in the lungs.

Colon cancer ranks third, with symptoms that include noticeable changes in bowel habits. To aid in early detection, Dr. Estreller recommended that individuals aged 45 and older, as well as those experiencing persistent digestive issues, undergo a colonoscopy.

Liver cancer, another prevalent type, often causes stomach pain and jaundice, a condition that leads to yellowing of the skin. Screening for this disease typically involves ultrasound and blood tests, particularly for individuals who have already been diagnosed with cirrhosis.

Prostate cancer, the fifth most common, affects only men. Difficulty in urination is one of its symptoms, though Dr. Estreller clarified that this does not always indicate cancer. Men are encouraged to undergo a Digital Re**al Exam (DRE) or a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test for proper assessment.

She said there are various treatments for cancer and it is advised to seek professional medical consultation from cancer specialists to detect the presence of cancer and to determine the best treatment for each patient.

In general, there are three current treatments for cancer: chemotherapy, radiation, and operation.

She also provided steps to lessen the risk of getting cancer:

β€’ Be smoke free
β€’ Be sunsmart and avoid sunbeds
β€’ Be active
β€’ Get recommended screening tests
β€’ Get the HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines
β€’ Eat vegetables, fruit, whole grain, legumes, and nuts
β€’ Eat less red and processed meats
β€’ Drink no or less alcohol
β€’ Be at healthy weight

She strongly discouraged the participants in engaging with activities that increase the risk of cancer. -Isabela Orasa/APR
